I'm not even gonna watch it for free in TV

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 4 points 53 minutes ago

I however found it mildly interesting that Zohran Mamdani was making this part of the issues he's messaging about for NYC, to at least drive down the price for locals. Free childcare, public owned groceries, sure, but FIFA tickets? Yet this graphic kinda puts that in perspective, so I get it.

Not only is this a ripoff, but traveling to the United States right now from literally any foreign country is a terrible idea.

If you get picked up off the street by the secret police, there's nobody who can come to your aid at that point.

Ending up on an ICE concentration camp: priceless

[–] NarrativeBear@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago

And for everything else there's MasterCard

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 7 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Lol.

The Divided States of Trashcanistan hasn't hosted since 1994 and it's going to be an absolute garbage shitshow for the wealthy only. Probably plagued with ICE terrorists. Not to mention another year under this admin and the dollar will probably have tanked another 10% and our cost of living will probably be even more absurd.

There's going to be 6 games within a 2 hour drive from me and I have no intention of going to any of them, despite spending the last few decades fantasizing about going to a World Cup game with some friends.

Pathetic shithole.

[–] philpo@feddit.org 3 points 1 hour ago

For the cheapest ticket you could have flown to the (excellent) womans European championship, got a CAT1 ticket, see Geneva and fly back.

Ir's a new world, designed for and by rich people. They plan to replace most of us with AI and automation, and want us to fight each to the death until 70% of the population is gone.

The RWC (rugby world cup) after this in Australia will have $20 tickets for kids...

[–] BeefandSquints@lemmy.dbzer0.com 97 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

As an American, you would have to be so fucking stupid to come here for this.

[–] AreaKode@lemmy.world 60 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

At least you only need a one-way ticket. Your return flight will be at no cost to you. Although the destination is not negotiable.

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 4 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (1 children)

Although the destination is not negotiable.

Have fun in El Salvador or Ghana!

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 40 minutes ago

Or Uganda. Or if you're REALLY unlucky, Mississippi.

[–] zout@fedia.io 11 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Good luck seeing the game then. "No return ticket? That's suspicious, you won't be allowed to enter."

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 6 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (1 children)

“No return ticket? That’s suspicious, you won’t be allowed to enter.”

Yeah, that was one of my most brick shittingests moments when I decided to migrate, planned how to leave my life in europe, made it so that all my possessions fit in one luggage and backpack, VISITED MY FRIEND IN DENMARK as a final goodbye like an idiot, and when I was trying to check in at Copenhagen airport "Do you not have a return ticket? Some countries don't let you enter without a return ticket" I shat a brick.

(EDIT : What the fuck was I meant to do in a completely foreign country with all my posessions, and my mate going to work who needed his own space and his own life? Oh yeah, ditch work and let me back in because I have no idea what the fuck to do anymore?)

I got allowed through because the country I moved to is based 😎

[–] teft@piefed.social 1 points 28 minutes ago

Now this would depend on you having the cash available to do this but couldn't you just buy a refundable plane or bus ticket? That way you'd have an outbound ticket but could refund it later if you get a visa extension or visa reclassification.

[–] ordnance_qf_17_pounder@reddthat.com 72 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

FIFA is one of the most corrupt, rotten organisations on the planet.

[–] sfxrlz@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Well then they’ve found the perfect country

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 37 minutes ago

Yeah, that's almost certainly a significant to decisive part of the reason why the US bid was accepted over the other applications: the bribes and the president basically being the American Infantino.

[–] falseWhite@programming.dev 46 points 5 hours ago

Alongside the current US administration.

[–] kersploosh@sh.itjust.works 65 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

Between the ticket prices and the, ah, challenging political climate in the US, I am really curious what game attendance will be.

[–] ggtdbz@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 22 minutes ago

It’s the most popular sporting event on the planet in a country with 300 million people, this is nothing like the Club World Cup that was held this year. The lack of tourists might not be a problem, save for maybe atmosphere.

This chart, with the huge ticket prices, is why the US was chosen.

[–] iAmTheTot@sh.itjust.works 27 points 4 hours ago

Packed. I sadly have no doubt.

[–] MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world 31 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

It is legitimately dangerous to travel to the United States, because of state sanctioned violence.

At least there's price gouging to offset concerns about personal safety, the very real possibility of being sent to a Concentration Camp, etc.

[–] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 8 points 3 hours ago (2 children)

Remember the 1936 Berlin Games?

iirc the government went out of its way to be accommodating to all attendees.

Banking on Trump being as coordinated and thoughtful as Hitler is not an overly wise way to reassure people.

[–] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 6 points 1 hour ago

True, History will remember Trump as 'Clumsy Hitler.'

"He could have ruled the world, if not for his tiny hands."

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 6 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Hitler cared about world perception of the Reich. Trump isn't looking to earn adoration and praise, he thinks it's his due.

[–] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 3 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

I'm always stunned by how tiny his mind is.

I mean, if I were a crooked President, I'd have extorted $50 billion form the Saudis on Inauguration Day 2016.

Team Rocket could have figured that play out. Meanwhile we have to watch him peddle sneakers and watches to his dupes.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 33 minutes ago

It's not as much or as fast, but he HAS enriched himself by several billion dollars. In fact, the majority of his wealth is now in meme coins specifically created to skirt campaign finance rules.

[–] calliope@retrolemmy.com 19 points 5 hours ago (3 children)

The 2022 World Cup was literally built by slaves. It has a way of keeping prices down.

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 3 points 50 minutes ago

Slave labour, chief architect Albert Speer Jr, it was reminiscent.

[–] j5906@feddit.org 13 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

2014 Germany for the final at category 1 was 990$, less than half, accounting for inflation and generously rounding this would be 1400$.

Edit: Less than half for Cat 4 right now

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 7 points 4 hours ago

It's not like those savings were passed down to the consumer. They were pocketed by corrupt officials.

[–] BroBot9000@lemmy.world 5 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

How many people died again for the one in Qatar?

Think America will match it?

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

I don't think even the MAGAs can fuck with OSHA

[–] plyth@feddit.org 13 points 5 hours ago

Same price for games in Mexico and the US. That's not good for Mexicans.

[–] urheber@discuss.tchncs.de 13 points 5 hours ago

People who want to go there deserve to be scammed into bankruptcy.

[–] Korne127@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Well, duh, no one wanted to watch it in fucking Qatar.

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 2 points 46 minutes ago* (last edited 45 minutes ago)

Qatar has 300,000 citizens. The other 2.3 million inhabitants are migrant slaves.

[–] DaMonsterKnees@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

Is this that Akufo league I've been hearing about?
