I call bullshit. I hate Microsoft as much as the next guy, but this seems fake to me.
Edit: I initially assumed OP created the fake email deliberately for ragebait. But most other people are assuming OP thinks (or thought) this email was real, meaning it's a scam email and OP's friend might be actively falling for the scam. I now agree with this interpretation. Sorry my initial comments were a bit rude.
Because it is. This is ragebait.
Sounds kinda like MS could tell the account wasn’t being used anymore and decided to kill it off rather than leave it to get hacked again. Still, it’s scary to think that MA might delete my account and I’d lose all my online backups. My daily photos are backed up on there.
That's why a lot of folk - okay a tiny amount of dedicated folk - are switching to open source alts or self hosting their own to maximise privacy and actually own their digital media, while keeping some of the comforts of modern technology.
I use a basic SMB shared drive as my own 'cloud', and (Android) FolderSync to periodically sync my phone's folders to it. I then back up that folder to a memory stick. But I've been experimenting with something that gives you the true UX of a cloud service - NextCloud. It's good. Alternatively OwnCloud
Microsoft has been making a lot of anti-consumer moves recently, so it feels even more necessary to cut off dependency to them and the other giant megacorps.
Wym? The Post or That They cant help?
The post. The email in the screenshot.
I get why it looks Fake, it looked Fake to me too but I do believe in microsoft bs and its from my friend so thats all I need personally
You think it's literally impossible that your friend would be fooled into thinking the email was from Microsoft when it wasn't?
No I dont but why shouldnt it be possible to believe he didnt and microsoft is just being microsoft again?
Because they just don't write emails like this, it's way more likely that some scammer fooled your friend.
Yea ig, but still, knowing microsoft it wouldnt surprise me honestly
Lots of people here know Microsoft support services quite well.
This is not Microsoft. Your friend is being scammed. If he gave them any information about himself, that information is now in the hands of scammers.
So many people have been trying to explain this to you, I dont know why you keep brushing it off. This is not an email from MS support. This is an email from a scammer. Your friends credit card info or identity are either about to be or have already been stolen.
I already Said I found it weird. But there is nothing wrong with believing my friend actually managed to contact Microsoft right. You dont know 100% if its an actual scam mail and neither do I. It is likely yes, but I just had faith and I dont see why you make it seem like it is 100% a Fake, even if not unlikely.
But just for the sake of it and bc yall got me more curious i decided to ask him for the sender of the mail and now im waiting for a reply
I get a lot of messages from MS - across a variety of their products - for the work I do. They are very standardized.
This does not resemble any email I have ever received from MS, but definitely resembles emails I've seen with scammers. This is why I've expressed concern here.
Its extremely unlikely, and the reason so many keep pointing this out is to make sure your friend safeguards their information, thats all. Having seen these situations before, I can also tell you about the very, very long legal aftermaths I've seen when identities are stolen. It can be years later and something new will crop up.
Assuming its MS is risky, and I hope you understand that people are really just trying to be helpful about this because we are (unfortunately) familiar.
I still get it 100% but that is the thing, I am as clueless as anybody else in These threads. I haven’t seen the Full email, he only sent me the screenshot where I blurred out his user. The only thing that differenciates me from the (other) skeptics is that I want to believe in that he did not send a mail to a scammer and used a correct mail adress instead. It is Not pragmatic I know but I dont think its that hard to understand that I want to think that he didnt Fall for a scam (again?).
In any case thanks yall for the concerns on his behalf and the Input of yall will definitely make me press him for more details regarding his mail Exchange.
I want to believe my mom won't fall for a scam.
Experience tells me she absolutely will.
I want to believe my coworkers won't go out and buy gift cards from a text claiming to be one of the partners.
Experience tells me they absolutely will.
My mom at least calls me now before she puts any personal information anywhere. With the folks at my office, I'm nowhere near as lucky. I have no idea why they buy the gift cards rather than, I dont know, calling one of the partners to confirm, but they do. Its happened four times now. There were very specific instructions given in a presentation, done at least once a year.
And yet, it happens.
I fully understand hoping for better, but the risk doesnt change. Confirmation is always worth it. They may feel embarrassed being asked, but how much more embarrassed would they be if they got scammed?
Just something to keep in mind, hope everything works out for your friend.
If your friend clicked that link they are deffo getting scammed.
