Why is Lavine an average or below average defender? (alien.top)

Lavine has all the physical tools to be one of the best 1v1 defenders in the league. Good defenders often have a combination of these physical tools and good instincts. Why isn’t he much better in this regard?

Lavine may have the physical tools, but defense is not just about physicality. It also requires good instincts, positioning, and effort. These are areas where Lavine has been inconsistent, leading to his average or below average defensive performance.
