We finally got Aldis around here and I was so disappointed. It's Trader Joe's with slightly more stuff, and a stupid checkout/bagging process. I can't get many of my weekly necessities there, so no I'm not going grocery shopping twice a week to save a few bucks, same as TJ's. They didn't have chocolate milk when I was there. The hell?

I hit Aldi first, get whatever I can get, and then go to Publix, which is more expensive, but they have great selection, and they have a lot of BOGOs. Saves me a ton of money.

Aldi isn't everything, but for what it is, it's great. Some of their products are as good or better than the name brands, and a LOT cheaper. Their mayo is exactly the same as Hellman's, and about $2 cheaper, their peanut butter is better than ANY name brand, and is less than $4. Strawberry jam is exactly the same as Smuckers, at about $2. Their kettle-cooked potato chips are the best on the shelves, and a bag is less than $2. Many of their brands are made in the same factory as big brands. It is suspected that their premium spaghetti sauce is the same as Rao's.

And watch the Aisle of Shame for greeting cards ($1 for cards that would be $10 from Hallmark), reading glasses (3 for $5), or sunglasses ($5), or lots of nice cooking gear. I grab stuff all year for Christmas presents.

Aldi saves me a bundle every week.

Unfortunately they don't carry unsweetened peanut butter. But their whole wheat bread is far less sweet than other store brands.

Actually, one of the things I love about their peanut butter is that it is slightly sweeter than the big brands, so yeah, that's valid.

Lots of other great deals, though. Their bread is every bit as good as Publix, at about a third the price.

And great French Bread Pizzas for about $3? I always keep about 3 of them in my freezer for a fast meal.

You go to Aldi for the staples to save a ton of money. Supplement elsewhere for other things. I used to live in Chicago and there was a Trader Joe's on top of an Aldi on the same building (same ownership in believe). It was glorious.

Aldi and Trader Joes are owned by two seperate people who have a.. lets say difficult relationship.

Thats how I felt first time. Every time I mentioned food affordability, not here but just in general, the overwhelming response has almost always been to go to Aldi, as if it was some wonderland of below market prices...

But it wasnt. At best its prices were the same as walmart.. and thats at best. Walmart was typically lower in most things I typically buy.

And yes, yes, I know.. Walmart is evil, I dont have the economic luxury to pay twice as much for my groceries elsewhere.
