I've never had a VR headset, and this is the first one I am considering as it feels like we are finally out of "First Gen" VR and we have moved into the product space of VR that is not clunky and burdonsome.

With that said - convince me to get one.

I have a killer PC for playing at my desk, and a Steamdeck for playing on my couch. What will I actually gain? I don't really have the space in my apartment for things that require moving around, and I don't really care for VRchat type social experiences. Is there anything about the platform that I will actually use, or will it become an expensive dust collector hanging on the side of my desk? I have a hard time coming up with something that will actually add value. The only thing I really want to play is Half Life Alyx because I love the series and it's the only thing I haven't played.

Well one would get a VR headset to play VR games. If you're not going to play VR games on the VR headset then it really isn't worth you getting one.

Yeah but what are some good VR games? This is the part I am having a hard time justifying. I never hear about good VR games. Beatsaber? Super Hot? Like... I love the Steamdeck because there is a plethora of 10/10 indie games that run awesome on it. It feels to me like the VR game library is very lacking in that sense. Like are there "Must play - 10/10" games that are VR only? What is the "Hollow Knight" of VR?

Probably Pavlov it's basically just CoD multiplayer, plus a less janky Gary's Mod, in VR. I've just check my stats and I have months worth of play time. It's also a hell of a workout.

The trailers on the steam page don't really do it justice. It's mostly about the community.

If you're into racing there's also Gran Turismo, I'm pretty sure Euro truck / American truck simulator also supports VR, as of course does Elite Dangerous and if you're prepared to buy into it Star Citizen.

There's also loads and loads of indie games but I don't really know about those because my VR experience has been exclusively PlayStation limited, where those titles are not available. But I do know that ultra wings is extremely good because I've played it on a friend's headset.

I normally wouldn't say I was particularly interested in the VR chat style community playroom thing either but I had a lot of fun with Rec Room which is essentially the same thing but is available on PlayStation. The problem with those games is they tend to have a lot of kids in them who shouldn't really be in there since most of those games are 18 plus. But I take the view that if they're in there, then they're fair play, and you can just shoot them if they're being annoying.

Oh and there's a dungeons and dragons simulator which is very good. If you're into dungeons and dragons. Oh and loads of poker games.

Sorry this is a bit rambly, I just keep thinking of titles I've played over the years.

The thing about VR games is they don't tend to get huge advertising budgets because it's still quite a niche market so it looks like there isn't really a lot of options. But if you actually have a look on the VR page there's loads. There's even quite a good VR MMO who's name I can't quite remember, but that's quite good, if kind of dated looking.

This was the type of information I was looking for, no need to apologize for being rambly. I'm going to look into these games and use them to weight my decision. Of course this all kind of hinges on the price of the frame. If the price point is right, it might be the platform that finally gets me to buy into VR, but I'm still very skeptical.

Honestly, one of main motivators is throwing money at things that use Arm arch for gaming. It's clearly the future and Apple silicon has forced the hand of a lot of developers to make business apps for Arm. But the steam frame feels like the first thing to make gaming on Arm mainstream. Baby steps, right? If the frame drums up enough development for games running natively on Arm, then maybe the next steam deck will be arm, and it will be super fucking awesome. Valve has spoken about not wanting to make a Steamdeck 2 until there is a "generational" leap. Arm arch would do that. It just needs people to develop for it (without using amd64 emulation)

Half Life Alyx is considered by many THE VR experience to be had, if you want to try what's this all about. I've seen it phrased this way a few times.

One of the lesser known applications for VR is for seated simulation type games. I personally have spent hundreds of hours playing games like Elite Dangerous, Microsoft Flight Simulator, and a few racing titles in VR. The sense of presence from VR makes them far more immersive and actually improves situational awareness.

The hardware is maybe no longer first gen but the games still are. Most feel like tech demos. The tech has been around long enough that you can start with an ok selection, but the space feels dead with almost no new launches of note or on the horizon.

I think most people that use their headset regularly do it for the social experiences and maybe porn.

Depends on your interests. There is definitely more limited game selections. But there are quite a few good ones. I've been playing valve Index for a few years now.

I thoroughly enjoy it.
