I mistakenly remember that The USA just defeated Mexico for all over the current USA’s Southwestern states. Thanks,

The Mexican Cession was part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican-American War.

The US did pay Mexico $15M as part of the same agreement, but, even so, characterizing it as a purchase seems kind of sketchy to me.
