Tbf until recently Lewis Dunk and Brighton could have filled those gaps. I think his performances have justified that reaction.

If Man City signed Dunk and banished him to the reserves for a season, he'd be starting for England. The sad fact is that being associated with a "big 6" team is just far more valuable to Southgate.
