1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. 5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

A British woman who was shot dead by her father while visiting his home in Texas had argued with him about US President Donald Trump earlier that day, an inquest has heard.

Lucy Harrison, from Warrington in Cheshire, was shot in the chest on 10 January 2025 in Prosper, near Dallas.

Police in the town investigated the 23-year-old's death as possible manslaughter but no criminal case was brought against Kris Harrison after a grand jury in Collin County declined to indict him.

An inquest into Lucy Harrison's death opened earlier at Cheshire Coroner's Court, where her boyfriend Sam Littler described the "big argument" about Trump, who was preparing to be inaugurated for his second term of office.

PSA: Avoid Texas, it's never safe. It's like Florida.

[–] ameancow@lemmy.world 17 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

It really depends on the part. Austin and San Antonio are very art-focused, moderate/liberal cities in some of the most beautiful areas of the country, but everywhere in America has rural populations of utterly deranged hog-people.

A place like Dallas you aren't as likely to get shot, but you are more likely to face weird, old-money racism and discrimination.

The problem with texas is it has some of the most vast areas of rural population, as the entire state is just this flat sprawl of land with isolated communities full of poor drug addicts who just stare at the flatness of it all before going insane.

[–] PointyFluff@lemmy.ml 9 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (3 children)

San Antonio is a shit-hole full of rich white people who fucking LOVE jebus

Edit: Oh and the "river" is a fucking concrete drainage ditch. Literally pathetic.

[–] chronicledmonocle@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

As someone who LIVES in San Antonio, bullshit. San Antonio is an awesome city.

It also houses one of the chapters for the Democratic Socialists of America and is exceptionally purple in political spectrum.

[–] ameancow@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I've been there a lot, I would definitely go back over any other city in Texas, the people there have been diverse and welcoming and the night-life is enjoyable if you're a social person- which probably is why this whole "San Antonio is pretty okay" sentiment is getting shot down on Lemmy, one of the internet's nests of asocial slacktivists and shut-ins who want to marry Linux.

[–] NauticalNoodle@lemmy.ml 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

the problem is that we can't avoid state-level politics while visiting the city of san antonio.

[–] Woht24@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I've visited many places both home and abroad and not participated in politics? What does that mean?

[–] NauticalNoodle@lemmy.ml 3 points 3 days ago

I mean if something goes wrong and you find yourself in court then you are still at the mercy of the politics of the state of Texas.

[–] French75@slrpnk.net 4 points 4 days ago

Relatable... I had an apartment in Studio City right on the LA River. It wasn't even the cool part of the river you see in movies. I used to jokingly call it my waterfront property.

[–] ameancow@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You should get away from the toxic people who are coloring your lens on the world.

[–] Woht24@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

I think Lemmy is one of the problems honestly. I see some batshit crazy mental gymnastics on here.

[–] moakley@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

There's also Houston, the largest city in the state. Houston is alright, mostly.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 days ago

Houston's all right except for the sprawl and the terrible climate, that is. Well, that and a homicide rate 75% higher than that in Los Angeles.

[–] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 16 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I know two very excellent people from Texas. They both had the sense to move abroad. I keep ripping on them because "You forgot about the Alamo, didn't you?!"

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 14 points 4 days ago

The alamo was a US led insurrection in Mexican territory because the rich US landowners there wanted slavery to continue, and for manifest destiony (aka zionist-style land theft). Its yet another stain on US history that we could only hope would ever be forgotten.

[–] MagicPterodactyl@lemmy.ml 10 points 4 days ago

Texas has a lot more guns than Florida, but yes both are awful

[–] chronicledmonocle@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago (4 children)

As a Liberal Texan, there are a lot of great, progressive places in Texas. Generalizing a whole fucking state is pretty shitty. You realize how many millions of people live here?

Yes, our governor sucks ass. The state is jerrymandered into Republican control. However, as someone who has travelled and lived in over two dozen states in the US, I can tell you I've seen some of the biggest Trumpers in rural "blue states" like California.

Don't blanket assume everyone is a gun toting, Trump voting Republican just because a state OVERALL votes a certain way.

[–] heyWhatsay@slrpnk.net 25 points 4 days ago (1 children)

People can be great, towns and cities can be nice, but corruption from leadership can ruin it for everyone. True for a state, the same for a country.

[–] chronicledmonocle@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (4 children)

Agreed, but much like all Americans aren't assholes because of the Federal government being Trump's cronies, generalizing the entire state of Texas as "a shithole" is what I find offensive.

[–] NewSocialWhoDis@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 days ago

It doesn't even matter what people on the Internet think of you. Wake up from your defensiveness. America is already at the point now where we are going to have to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Texas has long been a lost cause.

[–] _Nico198X_@europe.pub 3 points 4 days ago

then direct your ire at all the Americans ruining your reputation.

[–] Mannimarco@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 4 days ago

Well tough shit

[–] heyWhatsay@slrpnk.net 2 points 3 days ago

Sounds like something Trump would say. I never called it a shithole, I just said it's not safe there.

[–] NewSocialWhoDis@lemmy.zip 21 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Fuck this opinion. Every last member of my family is in Texas. From Austin to Ft. Worth. All the women are liberal and all the men are gun toting MAGAs. Maybe one brother is just a conspiracy-minded libertarian, but the rest are MAGAs. I still love them and visit them, but I don't want them having any legal jurisdiction over me or my kids.

[–] Woht24@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Make sure your Dad doesn't get drunk and ask if you want to see his Glock.

[–] pregnantwithrage@lemmy.world 19 points 4 days ago

Objectively speaking, you have to admit that if you are from any other states and visit Texas you would more likely be harassed by law enforcement or be a target for being an outsider. Does that mean that the citizens are all a reflection of that? Not really, but it would be very hard to convince a tourist (international or otherwise) to visit a state that has a backwards viewpoint that bleeds into their justice system.

Case in point, this women gets smoked and no charges are being pressed.

[–] Woht24@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Don't waste your breath, these people are frothing at the mouth levels of crazy. You can't convince them of anything, they think they know it all in their little regurgitating bubble worlds.

[–] desmosthenes@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

it’s a shame cause the food is sinfully out in the lone star state

[–] Not_mikey@lemmy.dbzer0.com -5 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Unless you're one of the billionaires fleeing the billionaire tax in California, in which case yes go to Texas, it's way safer then the crime ridden California cities. You don't even need to bring your body guards.

In fact, just broadcast to the world where you're going everyday. Walk amongst the citizenry, it's safe!
