ATH-R70x earcups not covering ear related to lack of bass? (alien.top)

I'm trying out a pair of ATH-R70x and realized their earcups are so small that they don't cover my ears at all, making them more like on-ear headphones. I'm wondering if this could be the cause for a suspicious lack of bass (as compared to the dt880s) I'm noticing...

Yes, even though they are open they still need to seal to have bass (note that this doesn't apply to on ears because they were tuned with that in mind).
