I love listening to metal as well and for me it's also really hard finding a good headphone that can fulfill these criterias with a strong bass, good details in the midrange and a bit of treble but not so much that it gets peaky which leads to hissing sounds.
Audio Technica seems to be good for that. Majority of people in this subreddit don't like them because they are not neutral and flat and not harman target curve based but I myself love my ATH-M30. They are really forward to your face, have power behind everything and the bass might be a bit too much for those people who prefer flat and neutral but for me it can't be enough.
For 200€ you won't find an acceptable replacement for the ATH-M50x.
Denon seems to be okay-ish but they also lack in the bass area in my opinion.
But it's hard finding something as a gift for headphones because you have to personally listen to headphones in order to find out what you prefer. If you know what your husband likes then you could test some headphones but in the end your ears will differ as well so it's always the best if he tests some by himself.
