No, it isn't always the same people because of injuries. But, there is a person that will count how many people are on the field during the huddle. Since it was a rushed field goal and no huddle, they didn't count. With that said, the coaches knew what was coming, and should have had the right people ready. The Broncos did.
That’s what I was wondering, things got hectic and someone lost the count.
One of my favorites back in the day (trying to find video) Antonio Pierce counting 12 and pushing one of his guys offside to get the play killed.
I'm trying to understand this but can you explain it? Isn't the penalty for both the same? (5 yards). Why is offsides better than too many men on field? Thanks
Ah, ok found someone else explaining it and I screwed it up.
Pierce saw he only had 10 on defense (playing a man down) so he ran up and got the infraction (giving 5 to get his man on the field).
The only reason I could see for doing it with 12 on the field would be to just not risk a free play (because you’re right it’s 5 either way).
