I have two communities on SDF and I'd like to move them to Piefed. But the SDF instance is dead.

I've been meaning to do that for months because the SDF instance has always worked like crap - when it worked at all - but I put off doing it because it was still kinda sorta working. In fact I specifically joined Piefed for the purpose of exfiltrating my communities from that godforsaken instance.

Well, I waited too long and now the SDF instance is properly dead. Despite the message on the main page, knowing SDF, I'm pretty sure it'll stay dead forever - or at least for a very long time.

How can I move my communities here? The instructions say I should lock the communities on the old instance, post pre-migration notices there, submit the move requests here, then post final migrations notice on the old instance. But of course, I can't do that since the old instance is hosed.

Can I submit a move request for my communities and lock them / post the migration notices later on the SDF instance when it comes back online (if it ever does)?

I just learnt that sdf shut down. was there a announcement post i missed? i had subbed to 4 comms via rss feeds, and been noticing that for about 1 week they never returned anything, but ignored considering shit happens.

I don't think SDF shut down: all the other Fediverse services they run are still alive and well, as always, and I can log into my SDF shell account just fine.

It's just the SDF Lemmy instance. This thing has never run well, has always been slow at the best of times, and down so often it's not even funny - sometimes for weeks at a time.

Whoever runs the Lemmy instance at SDF clearly doesn't give a rat's ass.

It may or may not come back. But like always, don't hold your breath. Me, I'm done with it. Good riddance.

The writing was on the wall for a while. Good luck with your migration.

Oh the migration is done. That was very painless thanks to @rimu@crust.piefed.social 🙂

Yeah, I joined SDF because I liked their "old computing" service concept. I even gave them money. But I quickly realized that there's never any help available when you hit the help thing in the shell account, and the one thing I use the most from them - their Lemmy server - is utter shit. I'm pretty sure it's an old server someone set up somewhere and completely forgot about.

It was not money well spent. Oh well...
