4+ hr director's cut: gimmie

I'd definitely watch that.

Even tho its a long movie, it did feel short and fast after reading the book lol

I want to see the courtroom showdown scene between Stratt and the copyright holders.

I was so sad this wasn't there. It was such a badass scene in the book. It was effectively just STRATT pulling the Ron Swanson "I can do what I want" and winning.

Stratt's characterisation in the film was very different. She came off as just another member of the hail mary team instead of the badass inhuman utilitarian boss she was in the book. A change for the worse IMO, though I think I'm in the minority there as one of her new scenes is supposedly very popular.

Grace was also quite different for that matter, though I'm more conflicted about that change.

Agreed on the stratt change. They seemingly watered her down a ton. It is what it is though. They also cut out a lot of the prep side if the mission. However they would have to cut something, it was already a 2.5 hour movie 🤣

Making Stratt a little more sympathetic and likeable probably wasn't a bad idea for the translation to the screen. They did the same thing with Annie and Mitch in The Martian. Book!Annie is - when the cameras aren't running - a foul mouthed abrasive asshat. Movie!Annie is a somewhat impatient jerk. Book!Mitch is a sledgehammer of a man, Movie!Mitch is a broody snotrag, I legitimately didn't recognize Sean Bean's character as Mitch Henderson.

Book!Stratt is, in Andy Weir's words, "A badass ice cube in heels." She's one of very few characters I can think of who is an unambiguously good person, and also thoroughly ruthless. She has a habit of taking possession of people...and biomes...she deems useful. She gets a humanizing and sobering "why I'm like this" speech near the end that works well in a novel but I don't know if it would play as well on screen.

I'll take a 4 hour director's cut any day!
