Luckily there is a perfect copy available on the high seas

Yeah I'd much rather watch it at home where I don't have Kyle, three aisles up, call one of his buddies for half the movie. Fucking Kyle.

[–] minorkeys@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

Everything streams on the high seas.

[–] altphoto@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago

And pay a shit ton of money for popcorn and Doritos. Fucking 100 Bucks or more easy.

[–] CarrierLost@infosec.pub 20 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That movie is already streaming from my home media server.

Good quality available or shitty cam recordings?

[–] Cherry@piefed.social 1 points 10 hours ago

Nope. Some good quality is available.

[–] MBech@feddit.dk 4 points 1 day ago

All I've found are shitty cam recordings. Granted, it's better than the cam recordings 20 years ago, but still shit.

[–] CarrierLost@infosec.pub 1 points 1 day ago

Like the above reply, screen recording. But it’s not awful like it used to be.

4+ hr director's cut: gimmie

[–] Keeponstalin@lemmy.world 29 points 2 days ago

I'd definitely watch that.

Even tho its a long movie, it did feel short and fast after reading the book lol

I want to see the courtroom showdown scene between Stratt and the copyright holders.

[–] white_nrdy@programming.dev 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I was so sad this wasn't there. It was such a badass scene in the book. It was effectively just STRATT pulling the Ron Swanson "I can do what I want" and winning.

[–] Dalvoron@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Stratt's characterisation in the film was very different. She came off as just another member of the hail mary team instead of the badass inhuman utilitarian boss she was in the book. A change for the worse IMO, though I think I'm in the minority there as one of her new scenes is supposedly very popular.

Grace was also quite different for that matter, though I'm more conflicted about that change.

[–] white_nrdy@programming.dev 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Agreed on the stratt change. They seemingly watered her down a ton. It is what it is though. They also cut out a lot of the prep side if the mission. However they would have to cut something, it was already a 2.5 hour movie 🤣

Making Stratt a little more sympathetic and likeable probably wasn't a bad idea for the translation to the screen. They did the same thing with Annie and Mitch in The Martian. Book!Annie is - when the cameras aren't running - a foul mouthed abrasive asshat. Movie!Annie is a somewhat impatient jerk. Book!Mitch is a sledgehammer of a man, Movie!Mitch is a broody snotrag, I legitimately didn't recognize Sean Bean's character as Mitch Henderson.

Book!Stratt is, in Andy Weir's words, "A badass ice cube in heels." She's one of very few characters I can think of who is an unambiguously good person, and also thoroughly ruthless. She has a habit of taking possession of people...and biomes...she deems useful. She gets a humanizing and sobering "why I'm like this" speech near the end that works well in a novel but I don't know if it would play as well on screen.

I'll take a 4 hour director's cut any day!

[–] liking625@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

faithful to the book and enjoyable, just watch it in any format you like.

[–] Fontasia@feddit.nl 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I swear there hasn't been this much insanity since VistaVision vs Todd-AO

[–] TheImpressiveX@piefed.social 7 points 1 day ago

Most of the PLFs (Premium Large Formats) are gimmicks. The only ones that really matter are IMAX, Dolby Cinema, and 70mm if you like analog film instead of digital.

[–] lime@feddit.nu 36 points 2 days ago (25 children)

it was a nice and quiet watch in the theater. nobody said a word for the entire thing and afterwards everyone left silently. that's how you know it's good.

That movie was speeding through all the events. It's an ok movie but it really needed to be longer.

[–] Confused_Emus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 27 points 2 days ago (17 children)

It’s already in my Plex library.

Saw it in IMAX, felt worth it. Loved the book, loved the movie, super disappointed in the author. Might not of done either of the first two things if I knew he was going on "anti-woke" podcasts bragging how he doesn't write politics.

Ya know, the one about averting catastrophic climate change.

..yeah the share it with others were you have to be completely quiet and not interact at all.

Ill wait for it to get to one of my streamers.

[–] nilloc@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 day ago

Add to that, the only “affordable” theater in my area just shut down. Like a week before this came out. I’m not paying $60+ for 2 hours in seats not built for a tall person.

Me and my family really wanted to watch it in theaters but they only hsd it in hungarian in hungary(even tho they usually have it with english audio in some cities) so i decided to just sail the high seas. I got a rip somehow that wasnt camera recorded tho pretty sure the audio was.

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago (3 children)

I'm happy to wait. I read the book, I know what happens. Also, I don't have any "others" to share it with.

(I don't care how good the telesync version is supposed to be.)
