A co-op doesn't mean there isn't any hierarchy, it means the hierarchy is accountable to its members rather than a small group of shareholders. Or in other words, the members are all equally shareholders. For example the Mondragon Corporation is a conglomerate of smaller coops, counting 70k members total, and I believe it's the biggest employer in the Basque region. Basically, democracy not just for states but also for business. IMO one of the most practical ideas for improving capitalist economies, that appeals to many political camps.
I know I already roped you into reading an essay, but if you like academic content with lots of statistics, this video essay about worker democracy might be right down your alley. It specifically goes into what the science agrees on and where it's unclear.
