This is largely because Xbox only exists because Bill Gates liked video games. Ballmer also liked video games and had been around under Gates so he was willing to float Xbox through the 360 era but the whole thing came out of Gates’ obsession with getting Microsoft into the living room in the late 90s. It was at least the 3rd attempt after Web TV/MSNBC and TiVo. The people who are left at MS don’t know how to deal with a passion project and only know how to take money out of things, this is the result.

Perfectly summed up. It also pairs well with the fact that it's a creative item vs everything else that has metrics and facts. It's why it's crazy for them to assume that since last game was this popular that that one should be even more popular, that it must be wildly popular. It's not, it's a creative work, some will like it, others won't.

They keep trying to apply Azure business metrics to a creative field
