Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)

It takes two to negotiate in good faith. Both Iran and the USA need to want peace, external pressure can only go so far in negotiations.

The problem here is entirely caused by the US.

It's really a case that Trump doesn't want peace and needs to bolster his ego

[–] bluGill@fedia.io 4 points 8 hours ago (5 children)

Iran had plenty of guilt.

Trump shouldn't have got involved. But Iran has been funding anyone willing to attack Israel long enough that I can't blame them for attacking Iran. And Israel in turn has been doing stupid things with their settler program. Blame exists all over and nobody with power wants peace (plenty without power want peace). Which is why trump was a fool thinking he could do anything useful.

Iran has been funding anyone willing to attack Israel

Funny how I never heard of a single missile hitting Israel prior to them bombing children in Iran

[–] bluGill@fedia.io 2 points 5 hours ago

Then you have not been paying attention. Hezbollah has been sending missiles in off and on for decades. Hamas in Yemen has been doing it once in a while. Palestine as well. All funded in large part by Iran.

And Israel in turn has been doing stupid things with their settler program.

Understatement of the century

Don't worry about the downvotes. Many Lemmy users that think "the enemy of my enemy is my friend". Iran is a cruel authoritarian system that massacres its own population, is reigned by fundamental islamists and destabilizes the whole region for decades. The US is fucked up and the attack was stupid, but people who got sympathies for Iran are crazy.

fundamental islamists

Worse actually. Doomsday cultists to be precise. Not entirely but their influence is very strong in Iran.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hojjatie_Society

However according to other sources, while the organization may oppose violence and political activity by its own members, it believes disorder and suffering (and sin and violence) are necessary to hasten the appearance of the Mahdi.

Who is Mahdi?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahdi

The Mahdi is said to be a descendant of Muhammad and is believed to appear at the End of Times, shortly before Jesus returns (in Islamic belief), to rid the world of evil and injustice.

Before his reappearance (Arabic: ΨΈΩ‡ΩˆΨ±, romanized: αΊ“uhΕ«r), the world will plunge into chaos, where immorality and ignorance will be commonplace, the Qur'an will be forgotten, and religion will be abandoned. There will be plagues, earthquakes, floods, wars and death.

He is viewed as the sole legitimate ruler of the Muslim world and the constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran recognizes him as the head of the state.

What do you get when a significant regional power wants to hasten the beginning of the apocalypse? Certainly not lasting stability, I believe.

Iran is a cruel authoritarian system that massacres its own population, is reigned by fundamental islamists and destabilizes the whole region for decades.

This is also the USA's fault for toppling Iran's progressive government and installing the ayatollah to get access to Iran's oil on the cheap.

That was before I was born, or for that matter, when most people alive today were born. We need to quit stopping looking at history and trying to place blame but look at the current world and figure out how we can we make it better. Mind that I have no clue how to do this either, but pointing to history is not particularly helpful to get to the future in this case.

[–] Omgpwnies@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

The key events happened between 1950 and 1990, plenty of people who are alive now were around for that. Also, studying and understanding history is critical to understanding the current state of the world and to chart a path that does not repeat those mistakes.

[–] lokalhorst@feddit.org 3 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

So the Mullahs are innocent or what is your point? That is a weird way to comprehend history.

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 6 points 5 hours ago

No the point is that it's the USA, the UK's and so forth fault because they keep fucking with any weaker country's politics such that they stay forever weak, regardless if that means propping up genocidal regimes

[–] auzy1@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

Trump wasn't TRYING for peace. He literally went over there to stomp on their foot, and sabotages any attempt at a ceasefire.

I would be unsurprised if its one of those stupid revenge things he's doing because someone said something bad about him at one time.

He's not using resources to defend America.. They're being used to benefit himself.

[–] moustachio@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago

The U.S. should be bombing Israel.

They’re a threat to global security, and an adversary to the United States.
