The presence of big tech anywhere near something like this is freaking me out, tbh

[–] haui_lemmy@lemmy.giftedmc.com 7 points 6 months ago

You‘re so right. Google hasnt got anything to do near this. We all know what they’re gonna use this for, right? They’re gonna find pathways that make looking away from ads impossible or hardwire the ads into our brains.

KEEP THEM FROM PURSUING THIS!

We don't need Google anywhere near brain research.

[–] whostosay@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I don't think you know how needed they really are. They have the talent, the hardware, and money. That said, we need to regulate because they also have one thing working against all else, greed.

[–] Plopp@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

How much would they spend on this if they're not allowed to apply their greed to the end result? They want ROI.

[–] whostosay@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

People that have that type of skill set don't get it by only chasing money, in guess some might, but genuine interest is more likely imo

The individuals, yes, but I'm talking about the corporation.

[–] whostosay@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

For sure, but it's just one of those things where you're not going to get one without the other in our current system unfortunately.

The entire world would have to work together to map the brain at this rate.

[–] davidgro@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago (1 children)

We kinda did that for the genome

[–] BrerChicken@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago (3 children)

This is so much more complex than the HGP

[–] davidgro@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

Very true. Even though we have more advanced data tools and everything, it would still be orders of magnitude more difficult

The genome is so much more complicated than... itself?

[–] MonkderDritte@feddit.de 1 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

No, genetic. There's epigenetics and looks like the histone has an influence too. HGP was only the start.

Which was so much more complex than mapping the GI track, but people were robbing graves for centuries trying to work that one out.
