With the selection of former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum as the candidate of the country’s ruling party in next June’s election, Mexico will for the first time have time two women from its main political movements competing for the presidency.

Sheinbaum, as well as the opposition candidate Xóchitl Gálvez, have insisted that Mexico is ready to be led by a woman, but it will not be an easy path.

On Wednesday night, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s Morena party announced that Sheinbaum had defeated five internal party rivals – all men. López Obrador has put women in important positions in his Cabinet and been a mentor for Sheinbaum, even while being accused at times of male chauvinism.

Imagine Mexico having a female president in a timeline where America elects Trump again. Then imagine the overwhelming amount of cringe coming out of the White House that'll make American people look like backward hillbillies, reinforcing all the already existing stereotypes.

Jeez I need to stock up on popcorn for this.

Italy elected Meloni(a woman who is a fascist) and France might elect Le Pen(a woman who is also fascist). The UK elected Thatcher and Turkey elected Ciller. Electing women is a meaningless metric. I bet all these countries are more sexist on average than the US. Trump is just a grifter, he has no ideology, other than narcissism.

Dont you understand that identity politics are being promoted as a distraction?

Mexico also just legalized abortion nationwide and they already have a form of universal healthcare. Soon people will be crossing the Rio Grande in the other direction.

Lots of people already go to Mexico for healthcare and prescription drugs because it's so much cheaper.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Canada too. We were going on vacation to Niagara Falls and I had some signs I was developing another kidney stone (false alarm, thankfully) and my wife said maybe we shouldn't go. I told her we'd be in a country with national healthcare and a terrific medical system. Why would I be worried about it?

Maybe go to Canada instead for medication. Mexico has a problem with counterfeit pills.

Unfortunately they (legally) can't because Texas is adding / already has laws which makes it illegal to even drive through areas if you are planning on getting and abortion at your destination.

What if it wasn't "planned" you travel to Mexico on vacation and oops I had an abortion while drunk one night.

[–] electrogamerman@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

If people get pregnant the same way, I dont see why they cant get an abortion the same way. Approved!

Abortion is decriminalised, so it's still not legal but it falls under civil law which is not as harsh as criminal law.

Edit: I misread the article, you can legally get an abortion at federal health facilities. I don't know about state health facilities.

While I love the praise Mexico is getting things seems different when you live in the country.

She hid her friend who was the director of Mexico city's metro when it collapsed because lack of maintenance and killed several people.

Her political party crippled the main out of the country scholarship organization (Conacyt) while her daughter got one for a PhD in philosophy... when those should be for STEM type of scholarships.

She got there because the president put her there, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

That some (most) Mexicans are afraid he'll (Lopez Obrador) pull a Nicholas Maduro type of government since more than once he got involved with Maduro type of political characters for official events.

Lopez Obrador complained that past administrations used Pegasus to spy on him while it's proven that he is doing it to news reporters.

Speaking of news reporters, we got the sadly top record of killing them, people that reported against his administration.

It is well known that he is letting drug cartels work to be at "peace" with them because he complained that Calderon's administration had a war against them. The issue is that most of the cartel people are uneducated bullies that do whatever they want and one can't defend yourself because we are afraid.

Lopez Obrador has given lots of power/money to the army and most of us are afraid in case he's planning to pull a Venezuela here. Army in Mexico isn't like the US one, think about US cops on steroids. He closed a mayor airport project only because it was started by the last administration, he claimed there was corruption but never showed proof of it, and used an old small military airport instead. That ended up costing way more than the original airport in fines as payment to those "corrupt" people.

While Mexico has tons of oil we all know it isn't the future and he heavily invested in a refinery at the state where he is from. So much that is screwing other areas.

He has granted government concessions directly to his people. By law there should be a contest.

He has giving us the speech that there's not enough money that we need to tight the belt while he spends lots of money in other things like Tren Maya or that refinery.

Every freaking day he has a TV show (4 hours or more) where he claims he's reporting what he's doing but most of the time he's just praising his political party and dissing others, he has reporters there asking questions but most of the time they are kissing his feet (Google Lord Molecula, I'll admit he's a character because of what he wears but he's mayor kiss ass). Sometimes he gets a real reporter asking uncomfortable questions but he just disses them "because they are paid by the opposition".

You can Google the news but most are in Spanish.

Don't get me wrong, it sounds like I'm against him while I'm supporting the other side, they are all the same, left or right, they just want to fill their pockets while screwing the country.

I'm tired of him being almost a celebrity and some people kissing his feet.

While there's an internal election that picked Sheinbaum, let me remind you that she was his favorite and his followers treat him like a celebrity. Mexico has a history of presidents designing their sucesor.

Don't get me wrong lots of people love him, I bet I'll get reply from a someone defending him.

Again, to me all sides are the same. I'm not left or right, in fact I don't like politics because I feel it's just a soap opera for grown ups. Sorry for the wall of text, just venting.
