Drew Barrymore and Bill Maher are both down from the height of their popularity, and I suspect they're afraid they'll lose more influence (and eventually their shows) as the strike goes on.

Well, I think this will get them both attention now. The right has been giving Bill Maher attention for awhile now and likely will continue to do so, but that's for political reasons.
The consequences will truly hit when the strike is over and they're iced out of the unions, missing out on other Hollywood opportunities. I suspect that will affect Drew far more than Bill.
I think that might be the point. If their audiences were waning, this is probably their gamble at a last hurrah. A last ditch attempt to pull in an audience before they’re shuffled off into celebrity podcast purgatory.
Drew has her whole career ahead of her, she's throwing away a lot of potential here.
Using other workers on her production staff as human shields for her own profit is especially disgusting. Shame on her.
I don't know if that's what's happening. I disagree with the decision but I can understand wanting to continue to give your non-striking employees work.
Everyone wants to do that. Drew is not somehow unique in this. But the collective agreement of the union is that the strike is the necessary next step to getting the contract they need.
Acting like she's the only person who cares about the people being put out of work is self-aggrandizing bullshit designed to distract you from her selflessness.
(And at the end of the day, it's the AMPTP that are to blame for the harm to those workers. They could give up the tiniest sliver of their annual income (its less than half a percent for each of the big five) and end the strike tomorrow.)
I get what you’re saying, but there must be some other way to do this that’s not so… shitty.
I mentioned it in a different comment thread, I think starting a similar podcast with the same non-union crew would be the way to go, especially for Bill Maher who has experience running a podcast
How would running a podcast help the crew members whose experience is purely related to the visual side?
A video podcast?
Or just donate the money made from the podcast.
Yeah, a video podcast, with the same crew from his show serving as the crew for the podcast.
All these other people, they need money too, and it doesn't matter that you're getting royally screwed. You should just grin and bear it. And if you think we won't just not give a shit about you, You're wrong.
