Stellaris. It's been "that game" for me practically as long as I've been into gaming. I've got nearly 1000 hours on Steam alone.

For me, it's any of the Total War games I like, or Battlefield 1, or Left 4 Dead 2, or any From Soulslike.

I like to call them evergreen games, because I'm a total snob. The kinds of games that you can always go back to no matter how long it's been, that you always know how to play by instinct at this point, that always entertain, feel weirdly comfy and make for great choices when you don't know what you wanna do. God bless them.

That's a decently long list lol, Medieval 2, Rome 1, Rome 2, Attila, Napoleon, Shogun 2 sorta... (I don't dislike the ones not listed, I just vibe less with them)

If you count mods and expansions, the list gets much larger, Medieval 2 Kingdoms, Empire Divided, Age of Charlemagne, The Great War, Divide Et Impera, 1212, 1100, The Third Age... And there are even more that have piqued my interest but haven't had a chance to play.

Aaaah it's such a rich series!

Slay The Spire

[–] Pseu@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

Minecraft. It's so dang cozy to me.

[–] megopie@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

KSP with the realism overhaul mod and realistic progression 1.

I just never get over the beauty of seeing a dual centaur upper stage gently drift away from an atlas booster before lighting up those stunning twin blue flames, careening deep in to the abyss of space.

[–] liblame@kbin.social 4 points 2 years ago (3 children)

Yeah it’s Europe 1400: the guild for me too. Love that game and can’t get behind the second or third game. I loved to play it over lan with my friends.

[–] PugJesus@kbin.social 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It has so much atmosphere to it, I don't think any other game has truly replicated it so far. Haven't tried the third yet but I heard bad things.

[–] liblame@kbin.social 3 points 2 years ago

The third works but that’s it. It was a buggy mess when it got into early access but the second developer that took it over did good work.

You are right. The atmosphere and that you did not have to micro manage so much stuff made it into a really great and relaxing game.

[–] aksdb@feddit.de 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I loved to play it over lan with my friends.

Or as a true Guild player describes it: "keeping save game backups and doing regular checks to figure out if the game state is still in sync". "The Guild" was the reason I got a "It's not a bug, it's a feature" T-Shirt for LAN parties.

And don't get me wrong: I am saying the game is SO GOOD it was totally worth all that trouble. I wish so hard for someone to release/leak the source code some time so someone with enough pain tolerance can try to rework the network stack. Or maybe a remaster of that game. It has a so much better feeling than its successors.

[–] liblame@kbin.social 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I would buy four copies if they would make a remaster/remake with the possibility to play over the internet. Damn… gonna install it again and I will start looking at creating a vpn server.

[–] aksdb@feddit.de 1 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

In my experience the sync issues get much worse over VPN. The implementation seems to be extremely timing sensitive.

Oh and over the internet you don't have the chance to quickly look over to your pals monitors to notice that their current court hearing scene looks different from yours (at which point you can alt+f4 and look for the last good savegame).

[–] liblame@kbin.social 1 points 2 years ago

thats a shame.... Then i will have to play solo.

ROCK and STONE to the bone

[–] l0st_scr1b3@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

That's it lads! Rock and Stone!

[–] shadowshinobi123@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

Deus Ex:Human Revolution. I know every part of that game and still find some fun paths/solutions I didn't know about, comforting with a bit of variety every time!

[–] snowbell@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

Sea of Thieves with my SO lately, previously Earth Defense Force with her as well.

[–] Razzazzika@lemm.ee 3 points 2 years ago

That be Binding of Isaac for me. I have 1000 games installed so it's even harder to get lost.

[–] bomberesque1@lemm.ee 3 points 2 years ago
[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It was the sims 2 but after the sims dlc started getting ridiculous I ended up finding rimworld which I like much better.

[–] GolGolarion@pathfinder.social 3 points 2 years ago

Huh, rimworld is kind of like sims 2 if you think about it. You control a bunch of hapless goons, build nice houses for them, and orchestrate their tragic demises.

[–] MrGerrit@feddit.nl 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It was Diablo for me, but D4 just doesn't scratch that right itch for me at the moment. Still play it from time to time but not as religiously as I did with the other entries.

Enter the gungeon I also play a lot over starting a new game.

[–] VoxAdActa@beehaw.org 1 points 2 years ago

but D4 just doesn’t scratch that right itch for me at the moment.

Try Grim Dawn. The graphics are mildly dated, but it's my favorite entry in the ARPG genre. Tons of replayability.

[–] trslim@pawb.social 3 points 2 years ago

Looks at 1000 hours of Arma 3.

Just one more King of the Hill match.

[–] Mazz52@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

Black Mesa. It's just my go-to game when I'm burned out from work/life. It's comfy for me to play, doesn't require my full attention, I can have videos on in the background, and I just love going through it over and over.

[–] all-knight-party@fedia.io 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Playing Heroes of the Storm vs AI, the Hitman WoA trilogy, Left 4 Dead 2, and Diablo 3 Hardcore. I can always chill on this stuff and know it'll be a good time

[–] sasquash471@feddit.de 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Ahh HOTS, the only MOBA I really enjoyed. To bad it never really took off and Blizz stopped development.

[–] all-knight-party@fedia.io 2 points 2 years ago

It's funnily enough part of why I continue to return to it. Competitive games as a service are too much, I dislike having to keep up with an ever inflating hero pool and a constantly changing Meta. I can just enjoy the gameplay polished to a sheen and the natural depth

[–] Stache_@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 years ago

Lifetime? RuneScape (oldschool, none of the rs3 stuff)

Within the last 5 or so years? Insurgency (mainly Sandstorm) Hits the perfect blend of realistic shooter with fast paced action. I also exclusively play coop where you’re on a team with other real people and you’re playing against a team of bots. Nice and easy-going. You aren’t getting all pissed off and mad at someone on the other team and the modded servers are really fun

[–] TheGreenGolem@lemm.ee 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Funnily enough, it's Heroes 3 for me too.

[–] Eggscellent@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago

Me too, finally had to uninstall it to get me to do something else.

[–] Suck_on_my_Presence@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

I bounce around between three or so.

I feel like I can always find something to do in Beatsaber, whether trying to beat my own scores or trying new modes or new modded songs.

Risk of Rain 2 is also great for mindless entertainment and trying new things.

Distance. It's sort of a racing game but with a story? It gets hard as hell but it's tons of fun and the music is great. It's criminally underplayed in my opinion

[–] Hellebert@beehaw.org 1 points 2 years ago

Risk of Rain 2

I tried this one but I couldn't get into it. I just kept getting overwhelmed by enemies and dying and I couldn't figure out why and gave up.

[–] Varixable@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I second trying BattleBit. It's what Battlefield should be.

Counter Strike: Source

[–] Hellebert@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Currently, 7 Days to Die, though I don't like where it's heading.

It's varied over the years and included Total Annihilation, Wow, Dwarf Fortress and Rimworld among others.

[–] TheCrimsonSpark@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 years ago

For me it's either FFXIV or Armello ATM.

[–] sunbunman@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

It used to be an old CCG called Alteil, probably have 1k+ hours on that. After playing bg3 this week, defs bg3, but I do have a habit of wafting around a bunch of crpgs.
