Debian versions are based on Toy Story characters.

Sure. There aren't any rules. VLCs version names are Discworld characters.

I use Federation starship classes as my codenames. Granted, I'm a tiny project, but I've yet to get a C&D from Paramount or the Roddenberry estate. 🤷🏻‍♂️

You did not mention where, and I’m not a lawyer, but I’ve never heard of a copywrite or trademark holder react to just the name on an open software release .

Can’t hurt to get permission

Edit: Cannot use, too many automated take down notices whenever release mentioned on certain media. Even with permission, it will be a pain
