After much paranoid nagging from the wife telling me not to wear my Batman on our travels, I’ve been in the market for an affordable alternative with similar dimensions at 40mm x 12mm.

Preferably automatic, steel bracelet and erring more to the sporty side. Preferably something that will make the “I told you so” sting a bit less if it does get lost or stolen.

I’m a Seiko and GS fanboy, but their sizing is just too wacky for my wrist and taste. The SSK is a bit too CHONK, and the GS SBGM247 is even more THICCCC at friggin 14.4mm

The only options I’ve been able to find so far are in the microbrand world.

Christopher Ward C63 GMT - 39mm x 11.85mm Zelos Spearfish GMT - 40mm x 13mm

They both use the same new Sellita movement, so I assume that’s how they’re able to pull this sizing off.

I’ve got my eye on the CW. Not that I have much of a choice anyway since Zelos always sells out their drops in like 10 seconds.

Any other recommendations?

Cheers!

Here’s a few microbrand options:

Lorier Hyperion

Traska Venturer

Baltic Aquascaphe GMT

Maen Hudson GMT

I’m going to second the Traska. It’s slim, relatively inexpensive if you lose it, and scratch resistant. Basically everything you’d want on a travelling GMT.

Oak & Oscar Humboldt GMT looks great in my opinion. I have the Zelos Spearfish GMT. It's great although I'll likely sell it soon because it's not getting much wrist time.

The longines is up there for me. The BB pro is way too thick for my taste

I would get this in a heartbeat if it were a tad smaller all around!

Oris Aquis GMT Date

Farer Lander IV

Traska Venturer GMT

39mm case width, 10mm thick, Miyota 9075 automatic movement. They're set to have more in stock on Nov 5th.

[–] Cajun_Doctor@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Damn. This watch looks GOOD!

[–] ThePrince_OfWhales@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I know right? If I didn't just recently buy another watch for about the same price I'd totally have gone with this one. Maybe next time.

[–] parkADV@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

This is absolutely the right choice. Slim, a bit sporty, great design and that 9075 movement is exactly what OP is looking for.

[–] pz46@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

WOW. This is definitely at the top of the list as well

[–] ThePrince_OfWhales@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Cool, enjoy! This has been on my list for a while but they've been out of stock for a long time. I can't decide between the four color options, they all just look fantastic.

If you do end up going with the Traska, let us know which one you get!

[–] nate2188764@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Check out the Monta Skyquest. Pricey but I think comparable in quality to much more expensive watches.

Why is your wife dictating your watch wearing and why are you listening to her? that's the real question.

[–] Slayer_Gaming@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Sounds like she‘s afraid of being mugged for it.

[–] pz46@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

“Happy wife, happy life”, or something like that

In all seriousness, she’s from Latin America, so we do go down there multiple times a year. She’s seen it all — people getting mugged over any luxury item. She doesn’t bring her designer purses and even switches her wallet whenever we go visit. And as a visible foreigner to their country, I already stick out like a sore thumb to begin with.

So paranoia? Maybe. Can’t blame her. She knows her country better than me.

But hey, this gives me a reason to get another watch!

[–] Adventurous_Grape100@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Nice one - then if she questions why you spent ten grand on a watch you can remind her it was her decision - genius

[–] professorfunkenpunk@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Steinhart is another option, depending on how you feel about homages

[–] elvid88@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I think they’re too thick. I thought them too and they’re closer to 14mm thick.

[–] echuuhh@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Chopard LUC Gmt one 42mm case, 11.7mm thick, in house chopard movement

[–] PlantSkyRun@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Maybe a Glycine Airman? There are a lot of different versions. Had the "18" and put it on an after market bracelet. Looked good with the blue gradient dial and steel or aluminum bezel.

Wayyyyyy cheaper, so if something happens, the biggest issue may be the "I told you so."

[–] WatchandThings@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Mido x Hodinkee GMT is 40.5mm with 13.5mm thickness, and it's a travel GMT. Similar to the Longines Zulu 39 in size and function, but more affordable. I think this can fly under the radar and keep you safe.

Lorier Hyperion and Hydra would also be my recommendation for well sized travel GMT, but you'll have to wait for the restock. There is a new Lorier Hydra in black case that's supposed to come out in mid Novemberish.

Does it have to be new? Why not pick up a 2531.8?

[–] pz46@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Doesn’t have to be new, but looking for a GMT function

[–] grumpyoldassguy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

You might also pick up an SPB 317.

[–] pz46@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I have an SPB143, but I’m on the hunt for a GMT. Obviously because it’s too hard to look at my phone to get the time back home 😁

[–] parkADV@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Something with a Miyota 9075 movement would be right up your alley. Low price, good quality and slim. Here’s a list of the watches currently using it: https://gist.github.com/ayhc/0d605ea30196531cb6c3ca509af5a888

My personal favourite is the Traska Venturer GMT, but you might find something else you prefer on there.

[–] pz46@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Wow I have a lot of reading to do. Thanks for this! The Traska is definitely near the top of the list now

[–] Lsclancy9@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

What the heck does she have against your batman? insure the darn thing and wear it.. That is what it is for. Im sure she doesn't leave her diamds at home LOL...JMO

[–] pz46@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

She does leave her diamonds and luxury items behind when we travel to her home country several times a year. It’s insured, but I’d rather not go through that whole dance.

Also.. this gives me an excuse for a new watch 😁

[–] Lsclancy9@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I was thinking last night and realized I had no right saying what i said and im sorry. I just feel bad for folks that live so much of their life in some sort of fear...Anyway..enjoy the watch hobby..

[–] bartraigures@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Baltic GMT? It's one of theirs with a better movement

[–] Different_Roof_4533@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Bell & Ross v2-93 GMT (black or blue dial)

$3800ish retail, but can find them new for under $3k.
