As per title, I made an unexpected purchase with this great watch on my first trip to Japan. While paying a visit to the Grand Seiko flagship store was certainly on my list, I wasn't expecting to leave with a new watch on my wrist. However, with both this trip marking a significant moment in my wife's and my life (basically me recently getting a new lease on life for the second time in a few years) and the SBGA407's mesmerizing beauty, I felt like it had to be. Reading up on the ambition and innovative technology that went into this movement made it an easy decision in the end. What a watch. I hope you guys enjoy the photo, much love goes out to the community for introducing me to the brand in the first place!

Unfortunately, it's really hard to capture the light blue hue of the dial with a camera...

you make enough $$ to scoop up a GS on a whim? I will sell you my next two "leases on life".

Beautiful piece. Would have gone high-beat instead of spring drive, but still awful Purdy.

I have the money saved up for my Grand Seiko but would like to buy it in Japan. My wife and I have been planning on doing a trip there with our family because we have never been but life has been so busy we haven't gotten the chance. I look at them almost every day drooling over them online and ALMOST want to just say fuck it, and pull the trigger now so I can have the watch. It would just be really special to buy it there but it's the same trope everyone says and I'm sure people are done hearing about it at this point, haha. If we don't have a trip planned by march, I'm just going to buy it.

If you buy it in Japan it will always have that extra sentimental value. Worth the wait imo.

God damn that dial is nice. Amazing watch, enjoy it!

Photos don't to the zaratsu polishing justice, do they? I have the GS Lake Suwa and everything about the watch screams, "Luxury!".

Anybody who is condescending because of your watch is a douche bag and in this case, a dbag with no taste.

You're right about the polishing, it really does look particularly amazing in real life.

As for the ignorant comments, I haven't encountered those but, living in Switzerland, I am expecting a few condescending remarks down the line haha. I couldn't care less though. Real enthusiasts appreciate the watch for what makes it stand out I suppose. I also love my Omega, my Breitling and my IWC, each for their own reasons.

Honestly I feel like that’s part of the charm of Grand Seiko. It’s very under the radar

Look at that subtle off-white coloring. The tasteful thickness of it. Oh, my God.

[–] braaasi@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (3 children)

The dial is actually a light blue color, but it's so hard to capture for some reason. But yes, it's gorgeous!

[–] Umbra427@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It even has a watermark

Camera might be auto-WBing if it's close enough to white. Try photographing it against a white paper background and see if it comes across better.

Better choice than the usual hyped models, you know what they are ;) The SBGA407 is a gorgeous watch with a classy case. The dial hardware, kit-kat indices, is preferable as well. Much prefer SS with a leather strap. If I buy a second SD I'd have to choose between this and the SBGA373 with the champagne dial. Wear it in good health.

I’m going that way next year as well. Where did you buy yours and can you buy tax-free?

[–] DAC_Returns@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

How much in yen did it cost?

[–] sdlemonade@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

What kind of discount, if any, did you get? 10% tourist tax exemption?

Beautiful watch! I’ll be flying to Tokyo next month. Do you mind me asking how much you got that watch for?

[–] OkShoulder8941@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Beautiful watch and it's even more special purchasing it in Japan. Safe travels

I also got my Seiko in Tokyo. I got a great price with how high the dollar was valued at the time compared to the yen.

[–] ccrepitation@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

How much was the customs fee bringing it back home?

[–] Disastrous_Ad_5421@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Wear the watch through customs, and they won't question that it's a personal item. Mail the empty box and papers, and declare it to be a box and papers on the custom declaration forms; which is 100% the truth.

Once you have a GS in hand, you get it. I have a SBGR317 and after 3 years I still marvel at it. Congrats!

[–] OOF-MY-PEE-PEE@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

god that's a watch. i don't even want to know the price.

[–] Low_Cockroach8623@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Congratulations! I walked by the ginza store last week and had to look away to resist. More importantly, I hope you keep well and enjoy the watch for a long lifetime!

That is a beautifully proportioned watch ! Does it have a screw-down crown ?
