Why did LeBron go to the NBA right after highschool but Carmelo did one year of college? Was Carmelo not good enough to go straight out of highschool?

Melo clearly valued his education

Melo wasnt Lebron James

According to him he planned on going for 3 years but since they won there wasn't much to do and his coach blessed him leaving. That's if I remember the story correctly.

It was extremely obvious watching Carmelo Anthony that year at Syracuse that he had no business being in college and was already not only NBA ready, but would be the best player on many NBA teams, as a 19 year old freshman.

I don't remember him getting that much hype in highschool (I remember Sebastian Telfair getting more buzz than Melo), so would say Melo put in a lot of work or just improved a lot as a player between his last year in highschool and his training camp with Syracuse.

Melo promised his mom he'd go to college and he says he liked the idea and enjoyed the experience of going to college. He didn't want to declare after winning Syracuse's first title but Boeheim told him to. He did have bad grades that also put his availability in potential jeopardy.

Lebron was better

I’m not from USA and always wondered why they were on different levels despite being born in the same year. Did LeBron start school later because he was born almost in 1985?

Yea, most schools use a Aug/Sep cut-off date when determining when you start school

Even when it was allowed, HS to NBA was still exceedingly rare.

Lebron more or less guaranteed to go top 3 if not 1st, he was the consensus best hs prospect and they were comparing him to MJ also he was being offered millions by Nike and other brands for endorsement deals upon being drafted, you can’t go higher than number 1 so going to college could only hurt him and then he would also be taking a massive pay cut.
