I don’t exactly remember how big hype was when Zion was drafted in 2019. I think he was depicted as the combination of Lebron and Barkley at that time. Did Zion get more hype than Wemby before entering the league?

Wemby by a lot

[–] IamNOBODY1973@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Wemby. Had they been in the same draft, Wemby would have went first.

[–] gamingnormie@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

That has nothing to do with who had more hype. Thats about who’s better

[–] HoagieTwoFace@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I think Wemby will win MVP within his first 4 years in the league. I’m that confident with the guy.

Yeah Wemby has had more hype and it’s not even close tbh

It goes

LeBron hype >> Wemby hype >> Zion and AD hype

[–] ObviousAnswerGuy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

for basketball fans yes, not for the mainstream public

Zion blowing out a shoe in college caused a national brand to take a full page ad out in the New York Post (or Times, can’t remember) . . . That’s some pretty big hype.

The answer is absolutely Zion. Some of you don't understand hype. It's not how highly ranked they were but how much buzz they had.

Zion had way more buzz. Wemby is the better prospect

Some of you don't understand nuance. It's different types. Zion had more public eyes due to being a dunk highlight reel on American soil. Wemby's hype is so much more intense and all-encompassing from a anyone remotely interested in the league standpoint. You could reasonably interpret it either way.

[–] BaileyHistory@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

No, you literally don't understand what the word hype means

[–] photacos@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

You must think European culture and basketball means nothing. Even with all the points you made, I still consider Wemby to be more hyped.

You’re just nitpicking semantics. hype, buzz, whatever dude. Might as well say you’re talking popularity.

Zion was more popular sure but people were saying Wemby is 7’5” who can potentially shoot like Curry and surpass Jordan, that blows Zion out the water man for sure. If that doesn’t get you HYPED something’s wrong with you

Zion was a bigger celebrity, Victor's more revered as a prospect.

[–] meekspuff@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Wemby has more of that mythic rare appeal whereas Zion is still rare in my cards

[–] ColdCocking@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Zion is purple while Wemby is orange

[–] JoJonesy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I think Zion had more hype among casual fans and the media, because he was playing in the NCAA and had an insanely entertaining playstyle with massive dunks. Among draft people Wemby’s clearly the better-regarded prospect though

[–] MSHinerb@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Casual fan? Zion. But Wemby by actual scouts.

[–] ayeno@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Zion, his Duke games had way more viewers than NBA games

[–] HEEMZAGIN@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Zion had a lot of hype in terms of being a flashy dunker and being a crowd fav etc, the marketing potential was definitely there to be one of the most popular players, and he absolutely had superstar and MVP potential too - But Wemby is definitely more highly regarded in terms of how good he can become.

So in a sense Zion had nearly as much hype but was not actually as highly regarded as a prospect

[–] jumboponcho@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If we’re talking in the US, we saw a lot more of Zion. Your kid brother to your granny knew who Zion was. Wemby didn’t have the same exposure here

[–] defiantcross@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

zion was slightly more hyped imo but only because of the marketing machine of the NCAA. college basketball has decades of experience propping up their players.

[–] Ace_FGC@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

On Broussard’s show someone said if Wemby has a career on the level of Hakeem or KD he’s a disappointment (I disagree with this heavily) so I’d say Wemby

[–] bbqyak@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Zion had more excitement around him but it's quite obvious Wemby has higher expectations.

[–] agk927@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Equal. Both were being portrayed as the best prospect since LeBron. All we can hope for is that Zion plays this year, and Wembanyama doesn't deal with injuries right away to derail his career. I'd just sit him for the remaining pre season games if the spurs have any left.

[–] PressureMiserable@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

He'll be alright as long as draymond isn't playing tonight, only been playing 20 minutes and I say he won't reach 30 a game this season probably 27 or 28. The nba is also a lot less physical than even in France, yeah crazy, he got beat up a lot last year and guys could actually foul him and he'd just get back up

[–] LandLongjumping2268@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

More ppl knew Zion before he entered the league than Wemby but talent wise ,as a prospect, Wemby is way ahead.

[–] Dischucker@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Tank for zion

[–] namagofuckyoself@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

On /r/nba, I've seen more videos of Zion, but overall it's Wemby.

[–] ThisOneGoes211@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Obama watching Zion destroy a shoe on live tv was surreal in retrospect. Zion hype was out of this world

[–] axnjxn00@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I knew about Wemby 3 years ago, so for me it's Wemby.

[–] photacos@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Answer is Wemby. Zion’s athleticism, touch, and dunking was super hyped but he was never seen as a guy to potentially to be the GOAT the way Wemby’s height/frame has provided for him. Zion playing in NCAA and being seen my more casual Americans is irrelevant.

Theres literal talk that Wemby can surpass Jordan if he fully lived up to his potential. Call that ridiculous or not, the talk and hype is there. As generational as Zion is, that potential ceiling was never brought up for him.

[–] Potential-Ad5470@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Wemby by a surprisingly large margin. The concern of Zion not staying healthy was justifiably loud
