Too much 1655 copy or an acceptable homage? Im planing on picking this watch up as i really like the design and the original is way out of my price range. I just dont want to be seen as someone wearing a knock off if that makes sense. Any opinions welcome as well as other options.

I'd just go with a Seestern to get your 1665 fix. Cheaper and arguably nicer in some aspects like the bracelet and clasp.

Are the Steinhart and Seestern both made in China?

[–] professorfunkenpunk@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I have the 42 and it is a fantastic piece.

Really great watch for a piece that is realistically hard to get for the average person.

I'd save the 200 odd quid and get the San Martin

[–] GlobeTrotter7991@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Is the case the same? Like Is the Steinhart also made in China?

I’ve seen this brand to receive quite a lot of hate for only making copies, but on the other hand people who have some of them seem to be pretty satisfied with the build quality considering the price range… it’s really up to you… if you want it for the looks, go for it I guess… but you could probably get better watch for this price, being an original piece…

I’ve had the older 42 version for years. It’s obviously a direct homage to the 1655 and so either you like that or you don’t. Personally I love the design but will never come across a 1655 in person much less have one on my wrist. Also I enjoy having a GMT that’s outside of the GMT Master design language. The build quality is terrific, especially for the price, and I think the ETA movement is an upgrade from an NH35.

I have two complaints with the watch. 1) Some watches, like mine, had an issue with the GMT hand slightly misaligned. Apparently Steinhart would fix it under warranty, but I lived with it until I had my watch serviced anyway. 2) the crown guards are short.

Steinharts are great quality watches for the price, I own two, and I own a Rolex and two Tudors.

Do people judge someone for hanging a quality reproduction of a painting instead of an original that is essentially unattainable for a normal person? If they do, you probably don’t need them in your life.

Steinhart makes great watches. Id argue that they’re a little pricey for their fit and finish, but the cost makes for a more consistent product. If you’re ok with a 1-5% chance that you might get a dud and will have to email back and forth with the seller, you can get a watch with substantially better fit and finish at a substantially lower cost by going with one of the Aliexpress watch manufacturers.

A few people suggested Sugess/Seestern. Sugess is actually a respected watch manufacturer in east Asia with a solid presence. But I’d suggest checking out San Martin’s offerings. They’re a smaller firm that’s been expanding away from homages into really nice original pieces, more like western micro brands. They’re not just an anonymous parts bin manufacturer and have been making the rounds at Asian watch expos this past year. I have a San Martin and will probably get another - it’s almost eery how much bang for the buck that watch has, truly top notch fit and finish. I don’t think they have a full on 1655 homage, but they do have offerings in a similar sort of realm.

I got the Steinhart Milsub a month ago and I love it.The finishing is excellent, and has a good movement.Their customer service is excellent, and I had the watch in 3 days to NY from Germany.Buy what you like, nobody pays attention to our watches anyway.👍🏻🍀

I own it and it’s one of my most used watches. Better quality than my tissot that cost double

[–] Organic_Foundation70@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Have this exact one just the vintage version, great watch, extremely accurate, and probably my favorite in my collection at this point.

[–] Schapsouille@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Any 1655 homage is acceptable since the original is made of unobtainium.

Nice to see that the 39 isn't gnomon edition anymore.

Gonna pick one up!

I have a Steinhart Ocean One double green. I love it, I think it’s gorgeous, but once a month or so someone stops me to ask if my “Rolex” is real, and I am suitably ashamed.

[–] professorfunkenpunk@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Someone once asked me if my spinnaker Dumas was a Rolex. That was a head scratcher.

[–] Rangercleo1@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

If you like it, go for it. 95% of people will not notice you even have a watch and very few of those who do notice will have any real thoughts about your watch. Who cares what some random watch snob thinks.

[–] 438Hung@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Hard agree!

[–] TheDonkeyOfDeath@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It's definitely a copy but because the original is no longer in production I think it's on the acceptable side. I was looking at the steinhart but opted for the Seestern because it was just the aesthetics of the watch that mattered to me.

[–] LatkasTaxi@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Everything that brand makes is a clone of copy. If that's ok with you I'm sure it will function fine

I'd rather own an original brand of an original design.

[–] RAN3220@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I have a stienhart batman GMT and it is a damn nice watch is it a new inspired design nope but still a good watch

[–] jwern01@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Get it. Enjoy it. I almost bought this exact watch because I’m not exactly going to buy a 1655 and beat on it as a daily wear. Yes, it’s an homage/copy, but it looks great and no one else will even recognize it’s lineage besides you.

[–] oshdbxowpdubxow@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Have one. I love it
