Just get him a chinese made Addiesdive pilot watch for sub $100, comes with a Seiko NH35 movement. Downside is it's mechanical which isn't the greatest when it comes to 8 year olds and consistent wear.

Movement is basically the same, the Explorer is a cal 3230 movement with no date, while the DJ is a cal 3235 movement with date. Performance wise it's the same.
If the Tudor BB58 gave you that wow feeling, save up for it. There are also used BB58s that you can pick up for a lower price.
He misunderstood your question. This is the Black one, you can tell by the bezel being a standard dive bezel. The Blue one has a backwards countdown bezel where the 50 is over the 10 minute marker, etc.
Go to the Rolex AD and talk to them directly, the sooner the better. Do it in person, don't email, be direct but respectful. Tell them what milestone you're celebrating. Good luck.

Steinharts are great quality watches for the price, I own two, and I own a Rolex and two Tudors.
My steinharts are nice (I have two of them) but my Pelagos 39 blows them out of th water (as it should, its over 6x the price of a Steinhart)
Rolex didn't see the change as big enough to warrant a reference number change, so you can have two watches with the same Rolex reference number and one will have an engraved rehaut and the other won't just due to year of manufacture.
Sometime around 2006, but phased in across the line up over several years. So there's a bunch of watches from 2006-2009 that still won't have them.
This model predates the engraved rehaut.
