the problem with Kimmich is that he can't beat a press like z.b. Thiago, he doesn't open up passing lanes with his movement, and he's not a strong defensive presence. He's mainly good for controlling tempo and pinging balls into the box, but that's not really enough for a modern midfielder. He needs to improve the other aspects of his game
