Which player is actually 'best' at guarding Nikola Jokic

For whatever reason before the WCF in 2023, there was a conception that Anthony Davis does very well against Nikola Jokic however that narrative has completely flipped.

I've seen Nurkic, Ayton, Draymond and Gobert mentioned before but the facts (stats) seem untrue.

While there might not be a Jokic stopper, is there an actual player that defends Jokic well to the point of keeping him to or below his averages?

Rui did a good job last year,

How does Embiid do against Jokic because he’s bigger and probably stronger and is a great rim protector

[–] -Drink_More_Water-@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Joking was cooking Embiid in the first half of that 47 point game. The 76ers then switched PJ Tucker on Jokic in the second half and slowed him down

[–] TheGreenLandEffect@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It was more so to allow Embiid to stay near the rim rather than get pull away and Jokic hit a cutter for an easy 2 since no one else in the team can protect the rim

[–] DrownedInBeans@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Embiid is better at guarding Jokic than Jokic is Embiid (at least that seems clear in their limited matchups), but I don't think either is great at it. I think Embiid could be but he's always kinda worn down on the offensive end.

I wanna see Wemby go against him.

[–] Nuclearsunburn@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I’m looking forward to watching that matchup too. Of course Jokic can go from scorer time facilitator at the drop of a hat so there’s no real chance to shut him down but Wemby presents him a unique challenge for sure

It's gonna be 3-5 years before wemby has the muscle to deal with Jokics dump truck on the low block

Chet will get his chance this Sunday, interested to see what happens with it

[–] Byzantinenova@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Jokic is really strong and has great foot work. Not saying Chet is a bad player but i dont think hes strong enough or can stop him in the paint.

[–] Next-Firefighter-753@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah I’m definitely not expecting Chet to hang with him his first time playing him

[–] Byzantinenova@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I wonder if he makes a Giannis transformation.

[–] YummyYumYumi@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

He had a season ending injury from one push from bron, they not gonna let him guard jokic

The injury was a fluke. He had no prior injury history and he was playing on a wet floor.

[–] YummyYumYumi@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

If we are being realistic jokic will fold him into two. Also wemby isn’t guarding jokic

[–] Charles__Martel@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

How is Wemby going to stop Jokic backing him down.

[–] TheEngine26@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He'll get three blocks and peeps will say Wemby got him, but Jokic will finish 17/20 for 53

Poeltl does a pretty good job. Good footwork, length, quickness and strong enough not to give up easy post layups. Always gets under Murray’s skin too for some weird reason

[–] yic0@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I nominate u/hunterwolves18 to be the Grizzlies' new starting C.

Unquestionably. Jokic has scored zero points against u/hunterwolves18 in his NBA career.

Game on the line, I want u\hunterwolves18 to take the last shot.

[–] gamer15807@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Just ask Lakers fans, they have Jokic stopper for a reason

[–] Pinky1337@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Willy Hernangomez

[–] renosaer@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Jokic torches Gobert, but I feel like Gobert still defends him well.

[–] dotelze@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The issue for Gobert, and this is the same for AD, is that they’re most impactful on defence when they can act as help defenders. Jokic neutralises that

[–] SuperMagpies@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Draymond was pretty good at stifling Jokic a few years back but I don’t think it’s close now. Jokic is just too damn good.

[–] ImGonnaChubbBradley@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Wendell Carter Jr

[–] herseyhawkins33@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

No one. Relatively speaking he's unstoppable.

[–] go_irish_1986@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I was listening to Zach Lowe and JJ talk yesterday on the pod cast and they mentioned how well lebron guarded jokic in the WCF. If he was younger and not injuried, I think he would just based on size, athleticism and IQ

[–] thelunarunit@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He is not the type of player you guard 1v1 because of his passing. It takes a team to guard him. You can defend him well and he will have like 15 assists. It's like curry you have defend your man and track what he is doing as well.

[–] xCTRLxALTxDELx@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Morris Twins can take him out of the game.

[–] 0dias_Chrysalis@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I've seen Giannis lock him up 1v1 enough times to be baffled Bud would walk away from it as a game progresses. Hopefully this year Griffin let's Giannis takes the defensive missions more.

Only nuggets and magic fans know it's wendell Carter for some reason

When the Wolves play against the Nuggets at full strength, KAT is usually the primary defender on Jokic not Rudy. It frees Rudy to keep Gordon off offensive boards and he can rotate to help against cutters.

Not saying KAT is going to stop Jokic, just saying anyone who thinks Gobert does is wrong.

[–] NateKvngMusic@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Dwight Howard lmfao

[–] dasaniAKON@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Dwight Howard.

[–] armandocalvinisius@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Willie Cauley Stein

Im not kidding

Tall dumb center is his kryptonite, that type of guy so chaotic so jok cant read them properly

[–] RVAIsTheGreatest@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It's really more about the team defensive and team scheme more than an individual guy locking up Joker one on one. Jokic literally averages basically a triple double against Wendell in his career so to say he's the best Jokic defender is a little silly but also reflects the fact that nobody is really stopping him one on one for a full game.

There are guys who can do so for some possessions, and those guys tend to have strong bases, use leverage well without being too handsy, and also agile enough to keep up with Joker's moves. There's not a lot of players who fit those descriptions.

Capela has done a decent job though relative to Jokic's averages against everyone, on Joker. He's got quick hips and though he isn't the absolute strongest center, he's very long and very good postionally.

[–] Camctrail@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

LeBron actually did better vs Jokic than AD, at least in their playoff series

[–] JStanten@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I have a memory that having both Adams and JJJ on the floor was alright but the stats probably don’t back it up. He’s unreal.

When a guys banging you like Jokic, it’s hard.

[–] RecalcitrantDuck@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Thunder fans- have you tried Dort on Jokic? I know it’s a different playstyle but I feel like those Dort/Smart type guys give Giannis a ton of trouble, I wonder if it’d help at all on Jokic
