I'm looking to upgrade my earbuds and buy something modern, but I am fairly privacy conscious and avoid downloading unnecessary apps when possible, especially when it comes to big tech. I usually prioritize FOSS repositories and github projects.

I'm noticing that all the big earbud providers nowadays want you to download an app to use their earbuds, and if you dont you lose a lot of functionality like ANC. Is there a way around this? Are there any popular Github projects that work as alternatives? Generally, I'm most interested in the Galaxy buds2 pro, pixel buds pro, and the Sony xm5; but I'll look at alternatives if there is an open-source way to utilize their functions.

Final ze3000 and the moondrop space travel are what you're looking for. Space travel if you want noise canceling and all that, the ze3000 just has sound.

You shouldn’t need an app for just pairing and using them with out-of-the-box settings but any EQ settings or other features beyond the Bluetooth standard need an app because none of it is standardized and that’s unlikely to change.

The xm4 / 5 are usable entirely without the app, you just need it to customize the controls an similar
