So to start with I work at an AD that carry's multiple Swiss brands from $350 price points all the way up to pre-owned PP, AP, of course Rolex, Cartier, etc. Since we are not an AD for those higher brands I like to focus on the brands that we are an AD for and one of them is Longines.

Disclaimer, the company has been great to me and wonderful to work with, that withstanding however, I am a huge fan. I think they offer exceptional value per dollar and I am keen on their vintage leaning design language rich history in the world of aviation.

So that is the why of my question, my actual question is How does the general watch enthusiast on Reddit feel about how the brand is positioning themselves in the market from any aspect such as price point, design language, marketing, public outreach, whatever. What makes them a solid or not so solid brand?

Thank you! I'm trying to get my team fired up about Longines and I want to know what people besides the people I work with think about Longines! Wrist shot of my heritage chrono for some tax.

TLDR: Do you like or dislike Longines and why?

Of all the brands, it is one of them.

Someone is selling a Longines Master GMT World Timer on watchexchange and it's a beauty.

Longines is my favourite brand alongside GS and Tudor. I guess that says enough about my liking for solid design, value, and reliability..

They are probably my favorite brand right now. I own the Spirit Zulu Time and a Master Moonphase but there’s at least 3 or 4 others that I really want. It seems like just about everything they release is interesting to me plus they I think they sit at a really nice price point for what you get.

Right now I’m really like the black PVD Legend Diver.

Generally a fan but I really don't like the fact that they went with a modular movement for the watch pictured and some other recent ones. Afaik it's obnoxious to service so the module typically gets tossed and who knows how long those will keep being made for. It also makes the watch thicker than it needs to be. All around a weird choice when they have access to very nice column wheel chronos from ETA.

Great brand and solid value

[–] pigsbladder@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Thanks to people in this sub and youtube reviews/videos, I have the Spirit Zulu and I'm very happy with it. I really like the Ultrachron and I plan to purchase that soon. I have a lot of respect for the brand. Unfortunately, due to where I live I'm going to have to wait until next spring before I can see one. (seasonal AD stores)

Zulu Time is the best watch in its price range

Nothing wrong with Longines, it’s a Swiss-made mall watch in an uber-competitive market segment of middling brands that sit uncomfortably between well-priced, superb Japanese watches and much more expensive decent Swiss watches. Longines IMHO are best bought second-hand as the prices are so much better for an okay watch. It wants to be a luxury brand, but has a way to go.

It’s absolutely ridiculous to call Longines a mall watch. They are one of the oldest watch companies and have significant history.

The watches seem nice but just aren’t my style

[–] _yeen@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

So honestly, I never really even considered them this year and now I think my next watch will definitely be a Longines, particularly a Spirit with the green dial. I currently own a Nomos, Sinn, Stowa, and 3 Seikos.

Well made Omega-lite watches with high spec ETA movements and non-boring dials at a reasonable price? Awesome! I originally thought my next watch would be a Tudor BB Ceramic, but the Longines will likely become a pit stop before that.

[–] CatBroiler@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I guess the Ultrachron is cool because it's a 10hz movement.

But otherwise Longines isn't a brand that inspires me, really.

And I really dislike how the Hydroconquest with the arabic numeral dial looks, that's probably my least favourite common watch design.

I got the moonphase as a wedding present from my wife. I absolutely love it. I know the brand has a long history making high quality time pieces and I'm grateful I get to have one.

[–] laney_deschutes@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Same as all swatch brands. Over priced over rated corporate watch

[–] jscic@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Underrated brand in my opinion. They have great craftsmanship, a great history and some of their recent releases are really hitting the mark. This is my 37mm Spirit which I haven't stopped wearing.

I picked up the Conquest VHP about 6 months ago to have a perpetual calendar in a beater. It is cool af how it knows to skip ahead an hr if you rotate the crown quickly vrs a slow roll to set the minutes. It hasn't gotten a lot of wrist time but I've worn it to a couple festivals and to work a handful of times. The rubber band is pretty comfy and the weight is good. I just wish it had a screw down crown.

[–] joelognn@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Some of Longines' designs really appeal to me, as does the brand, heritage, etc. You really get a lot for your money with them. In that price bracket, and compared to the competition, there really is a lot to love. As others have mentioned, the Zulu Time, Conquest/Hydroconquest are excellent watches.

However I don't actually own one, and never have. I guess the reason is that in the end, I would have to stomach the financial loss when I ultimately flip it for what I really wanted. Which for the Hydroconquest, would probably be the Submariner or 300M. In the case of the Zulu Time, would definitely be the GMT Master II.

I do like some of the Longines design especially their chronographs, but when it comes to actually buying I found myself gravitate towards either something way cheaper or Tudor at similar price point. Other than that I just kept thinking longines is for more classy people like horse riders as I see them sponsors a lot of the riding competition and horse riders, oh and also lately J law and Bridgeton lol. Tudor seems to suit me more for everyday causal wearing, it goes well with jeans and T-shirt as well as smart casual where as longines seems to be more buttoned up

[–] Queasy-Bad600@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It’s the poor quality modified ETA movements that are the only problem for me. Poor quality where I mean they can certainly do more for a brand like longines.

Best Brand for me. I always loved the Masters Collection but this year they killed it with the Conquest GMT and Zulu Time.

[–] Alberta_Boi@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I love Longine… the Zulu is one of my absolute favourite!

[–] inzur@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The Zulu is dope.

[–] Mawaqeet@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Dear OP what a great watch, could you kindly share a couple of different angle wrist shots?

Much appreciated 💕

[–] Funny-Anything-791@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Personally, I find them ugly 🤷‍♂️

[–] ThenScore2885@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I love them. I never wanted to spend more than 2k for a quality automatic watch. In less than two months I bought 3 longines. So spent more than I originally planned but ended up having 3 great watches; heritage flagship, 1945 and a legend diver. I know they are not investment, I can never sell and got my money back, but they are well built and age well and I plan to give them to my kids one day.

[–] trishulofshiv@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

This is how I feel about the brand. Waiting in the lounge for my client, wearing my Longines Avigation Big Eye Stainless Steel.

Love this watch.

Longines have an incredible heritage. Which in some ways is part of their problem in the current market. Heritage. They were more a brand of the first half of the 20th century and didn't translate as well as others like Omega or Rolex to the second half and into the common market consciousness of today.

Heritage? They(along with Omega and Zenith) dominated the Swiss chronometer trials and took the top spot in most prizes awarded. They won more in single years than Rolex won in the entire span of the trials. Brands like Patek didn't even figure. Oddly even then Longines' marketing was weird. They pushed the "World's most honoured watch" but sold few official chronometer tested watches.

They have a history in aviation, particularly the pioneering days, that brands like IWC or Breitling could only dream about. They were the inhouse chronograph producer in the first half of the 20th century, pretty much everyone else bought in movements. They invented the flyback and the two button chronograph(not Breitling as is often claimed. Well you kinda need a second pusher for flyback). They had 'calatrava' style cases before Patek, so came up with that modern style before them. External bezels on near every diver's watch? Longines had them decades before, but for pilots(interestingly their patent ran out in 1951 and modern divers came out a couple of years later. Probably a coincidence, but interesting). First second timezone on a watch. They along with Girard Perregaux were the first to get into higher frequency movements. When the race for quartz was kicking in they were part of the Swiss beta dev team and had enough spare capacity to develop their own inhouse quartz and bring it to market(and later brought thermocompensation to quartz).

When Vacheron Constantin and Jaeger LeCoultre, big hitters today in the top end segment, wanted to penetrate the US market in the 40's and bypass taxes on imports, who did they partner up with? Longines, who had already been shipping 200k movements per year through their Longines Wittnauer factory, to create LeCoultre watches for that market. Longines were huge back then and high quality. VC and JLC didn't have to worry about them stealing designs.

It's post the 1980's where it went south. They never had a 'Bond watch' or any other current famous person watch, real or fictional. They didn't have a 'space watch' and though they certainly had a long history of military issued watches they never really promoted that. They stopped production of inhouse mechanical movements in the 70's, so missed out on the new "mechanical has soul" stuff. They timed lots of sports events, but again didn't really push that cohesively enough. Their historical branding was less clear and often scattergun. No distinct and easy to recall lines of Seamasters/Submariners etc

Most of all they were lumbered with SWATCH's tiers. They couldn't compete with Omega and even today you get the sense they're not allowed to. They're often subdued even almost apologetic with promoting themselves. They 'stay in lane'. Which is a pity.

The brand has incredible history and a very extensive catalog-something for everyone. I’ve tried numerous pieces but the long lug to lug length on the timepieces I’m interested in has held me back from owning anything from the brand.

[–] schmirsich@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I think Longines has a shocking number absolute banger watches for the price. Their watches are not upper echelon quality (like e.g. Omega or Rolex) and at the same time they are not exactly cheap (like Seiko, Hamilton, etc.). If you can pay 2k or 3k for a watch that is imho better than it should be for that price (which I think they are - I love Longines), then chances are high you can probably pay 4k or 5k as well in which case you might go for something a bit nicer. I think that puts them in an awkward position in the market, so they are less popular than they should be. Again I think they still have a shocking number of amazing watches that are cheaper than they have any right to be. Many of their watches really match my personal taste, so I like them more than the average watch nerd, I think. I recently bought the Longines Spirit 40mm and I am eye-ing (heh) the Big Eye Titanium for the near future as well.

[–] Blown89@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I like them on paper and in photographs. In person they look and feel cheap.
