So to start with I work at an AD that carry's multiple Swiss brands from $350 price points all the way up to pre-owned PP, AP, of course Rolex, Cartier, etc. Since we are not an AD for those higher brands I like to focus on the brands that we are an AD for and one of them is Longines.

Disclaimer, the company has been great to me and wonderful to work with, that withstanding however, I am a huge fan. I think they offer exceptional value per dollar and I am keen on their vintage leaning design language rich history in the world of aviation.

So that is the why of my question, my actual question is How does the general watch enthusiast on Reddit feel about how the brand is positioning themselves in the market from any aspect such as price point, design language, marketing, public outreach, whatever. What makes them a solid or not so solid brand?

Thank you! I'm trying to get my team fired up about Longines and I want to know what people besides the people I work with think about Longines! Wrist shot of my heritage chrono for some tax.

TLDR: Do you like or dislike Longines and why?

I feel like anything they make below 1000-2000 isn't worth it and there's better watches out there than them in the price bracket they start being worth it

I think the "problem" isnt what they are. Its what they arent hand havent been for years. They havent been Rolex or Cartier or any of those other prestige brands for a very long time. Although decades ago they were definitely on par, they had a long period in the wilderness making cheaper less well designed watches. And that's what people think of because they spent your entire lifetime as exactly that.

The new designs are good. Really good. But design isnt everything and watches are an emotional and status thing as well. Right now, they dont have the status, and argue what you want, but that counts.

If they stay on their game another 5, 10, 20 years... they'll be right there again. But you can lose status in a minute that it takes years to regain. They're going through that now.

Longines is one of the best bang-for-buck brands out there. I love a lot of what they do. I will say I can see them stagnating a bit because they do lean pretty hard on their heritage and they haven’t innovated much recently. That being said, their heritage and vintage style is what’s keeping them on top of the “value” market, so should they even be trying to innovate more? I’m not sure, but I’m excited to see where they head in the future!

I'll bet I have the weirdest take here...When I was a kid they would give Longines watches away on game shows, mainly The Price is Right. So, when I hear the name I immediately associate it with game shows and it cheapens the brand for me.

That said, they make some beautiful watches and I am looking at them.

I love longines and rado. When I was a kid in Singapore, I used to look at those two watches in awe so I guess I've always had a history with liking them..

Classic and ealagent and the brand is a good honest brands

Cool history but currently being mass produced to a specific price point and with some overdone fashion forward characteristics on a lot of watches and shortcuts forced into other watches to make them sit in the correct spot in the hierarchy to push people upmarket into other brands. Not their fault. I'd buy a vintage one in a heartbeat, but no reason to buy anything post quartz crisis.

This is the type of feedback that I love. Can you elaborate on what hinderance manufacturing to a specific price point has had on their watches? I do agree that they are very eta heavy with their internals due to their swatch group station.

And why the preference to the older pieces over the new? Just the change in design? I’m just curious and I love hear well informed negative feedback! Thanks!

I just don't see anything on the internals that isn't pure eta cost efficiency, but you go back to a late 60s watch and they're basically on par with Zenith, Rolex and Omega. It's like swatch intentionally gives them lesser fit and finish so they don't compete with Omega and it's artificial to me. You get better quality automatic watches for $500-600 if you go non swatch/richemont. Whereas with vintage ones sure they may all be Lemania or whatever inside but there's no "this watch is better than that" artificial demand, they're all just good watches. And dials and lettering on Longines always looks tacky to me. Just comparing a jlc master control to the longines master L.2.673.4.78.3 the shape of the lugs looks put of place, the dial is SO busy, the polish looks more like a plating than a nice polish, the pushers have a bezel that looks awkward on the case, lots of lettering is obscured and feels like there are letters covering letters, the dial texture makes it feel even more busy. But those choices don't save money, they're design choices to make the watch say "look at me I'm fancy", it's overstated, to get the function back you have to move up. And with the heritage watches, you're paying more than vintage prices for an inferior mass produced movement so just no value for me.

I’m a fan of their history, but I prefer the older models. I am currently searching for a Longines Lindbergh from 1985

I like Longines for watches like this one :

https://api.ecom.longines.com/media/catalog/product/w/a/watch-collection-longines-spirit-l3-821-4-93-2-1683700752.png?&w=1920

But the whole brand is a total mess, there are watches everywhere on their site, they have veryb low visual identity for expensive watches (because, yes, there are 200000000$ watches out there, but still, a 3k/7k one still isn't cheap), it's quite difficult to understand what the brand is trying to do.

[–] onlyforfun38@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

That's a nice watch.

Longines have quietly been releasing absolute bangers this year

[–] New_Dig6900@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I was a biggest fan of Longines when Walter von Kaennel used to rule the company. I bought Evidenza and one of the first Master Collection Chronograph and Heritage Lindbergh Watch. For my opinion the Heritage Collection still has great issues, but mostly the brand itself looses its value

[–] SanderDieman@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Vintage Longines from say the 1920s through to the 1970s are often exquisite. In those days they were at the top of their game, and the industry in general. Really high quality, beautiful watches with a long-standing top tier reputation. Love to wear some of those golden oldies.

In recent years they have repositioned themselves, more modestly yet at that quite admirably: some (not all!) great looking, very well finished watches with adequate - sometimes COSC level - movements (derived from proven ETA’s typically), at reasonable price points somewhere between $1,500 and $3,500 mostly. Again, a proper choice to consider in quite a few categories.

In comparison to most other offering in that segment, I think Longines are punching way above their weight. I find that refreshing and very good for both consumer and industry: Longines definitely help keep the game in the mid-market lively!

[–] jmardoxie@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I think it punches above its weight class. It’s mid tier on the swatch lineup. While many lower end Swiss watches have 2824 or sw200 movements many of the longines have a 2892 movement which is a step up. I think the hydro is hard to beat without paying a lot more.

extremely u der rated powerhouse of a watch that has been around for a very long time

[–] LilMudButt@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago
