ESPN is now using Associated Press AI-generated journalism “using technology provided by Data Skrive and data from Sportradar.” I don’t remember this being the case last year.

For such a short writeup, the game preview for tonight’s Sixers/Bucks game is amazingly bad:

Bucks host the 76ers to begin season

ByData Skrive Oct 25, 2023, 02:03 am Philadelphia 76ers vs. Milwaukee Bucks

Milwaukee; Thursday, 7:30 p.m. EDT

Bucks -5.5

BOTTOM LINE: The Milwaukee Bucks begin the season at home against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Milwaukee went 58-24 overall, 35-16 in Eastern Conference play and 32-8 at home during the 2022-23 season. The Bucks averaged 13.7 points off of turnovers, 14.4 second-chance points and 34.3 bench points last season.

Philadelphia went 54-28 overall and 34-18 in Eastern Conference play during the 2022-23 season. The 76ers averaged 115.2 points per game while allowing opponents to score 110.9 last season.

INJURIES: Bucks: None listed.

76ers: None listed.

It's not the worst.

At least it's not full of opinions that are not relevant to the game brought to you by bud light.

Can't even get a serial comma right.

This is not AI. That's just templated content being fed by API data. ESPN's been using this for several years, even before ChatGPT and other AI engines went public.

[–] Julian_Caesar@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah ESPN has been using generated content for a lot longer than this year

So many companies are rushing AI adoption right now without a fucking clue of what it’s capable of.

[–] jessediebolt@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

What’s so bad about it? No one is reading it anyways

I don't think people are ready for how unusable the internet is going to become with this sort of thing. Especially when AI starts learning from all of the glut of AI crap that's already out there

I think ppl are overreacting. It’s not sentient, it’s a super advanced chat bot. It’s applications are super helpful for speeding up certain tasks ten-fold.

It's not AI, they just got Magic Johnson to write everything

Nikola Jokic is going to be a star player in the NBA this season.

It's crazy the amount of things they are blaming Allen Iverson for these days. I mean, he's great but he's not going to take everyone's jobs or fundamentally alter human relationships

[–] luke_workin@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

They have been doing this since last year at least. And yes agree it’s atrocious

There's even an error in it. I was wondering how the Bucks only played 51 Eastern Conference games last year, and the answer is that the stat is incorrect and Milwaukee actually went 35-17 last year against the East.

Thanks, Magic.

"The game will be played in Milwaukee, a historic city in the US state of Wisconsin."

[–] thenorthmelon@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I totally thought those previews had been auto-generated for several years already because of how formulaic they always felt.

[–] Beef_Dirky@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

"Here is the game. And here are a few random stats I drew out of a hat. You're welcome."

[–] KingOfWeTheNorth@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Quiet down, they're still paying me per word lmao

[–] Duckys0n@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Can they really not tell an intern to prompt it correctly? Jesus Christ. They just plugged in stats and said make a quick game preview 😂

[–] BigFaceCoffeeShop@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

And the worst part? I bet their bottom line improved, because the masses don't give a shit.

Chatbot’s reply: That's really interesting to hear! It's exciting to see how AI and technology are changing the way we consume and produce sports news. I'm curious to see how this partnership will impact the quality and accuracy of the articles produced by ESPN. It will be fascinating to see if AI-generated journalism becomes the norm in the sports industry.
