Fucking love it! I've always found the 'it's not a choice' a weak argument. What if it were? If there exists someone who can turn gay (or bi, ace, straight.. whatever) at will wouldn't they deserve the same respect and rights whatever they choose?

The worst is when "they" come back at you with you choose to be gay because even if you're only attracted to people of the same sex, it's still a choice as to whether or not you act on it.
Fucked up argument, it makes my blood boil. Religious trauma sucks, and that is one of their top 5 lines.
Yeah, I like leaning into the idea that it could be a choice because it takes away an easy nonstarter for opposing arguments.
I'm not gay. But I'm also not hateful. When in the 90s we were talking in school about it being a choice, it was a far far different time. Just to give an example, San Fransisco is the gayest city in America. The second gayest city in America is Lakewood Ohio. That's where I live. Second gayest city in America, and in 1994 a man was brutally beaten, handcuffed to a steel fence, and bludgened with wooden baseball bats while he can't deflect any blows with his arms. Can't fight back in any way, and is taking a 4 on 1 beating. This was directly in front of a catholic school at about 2am. The police station is 2 streets away. His screams were ignored. His body lay on the sidewalk for hours. He was targeted because he was gay. And at the time in societys mind that was justification for every neighbor who saw this, every pedestrian who passed his body, and every cop to all ignore him. Because he was gay. That's what was socially acceptable at that time. The social understand (and I don't agree with this, I'm stating for contrast) is that gay people were mentally disturbed individuals who wanted the world to burn in sin. The way people talked about gay people in the second gayest city inthe country was as if gay people were a problem that must be exterminated before they infect everyone with aids. I was 11 at the time. I barely understood what sex was, or being gay. I was in 4th grade at the time. I STILL think my evaluation of it is leagues better than "born with it, or a choice" debate.
It's neither. It's a taste. And I call it a taste because I relate it to the taste buds in your tongue. When you're born, you didn't choose to like mac n cheese. It's not something you're born with. It's not something you choose either. However, if you grew up being exposed to mac n cheese, you're probably more likely to enjoy mac n cheese. Wasn't a choice. Wasn't born with. It's something that developed within your own body because of exposure to it.
And these tastes can change over time. You may have been in a gay accepting house, and at 15 were gay. Maybe by the time you're 40 your tastes have changed. Maybe you're bi now. Or maybe asexual. There's no one set path for how the human brain works, so I can't say "THIS is how these scenarios will play out 100% of the time, because that's normal.
There is no normal. There is no abnormal. There is no standardized sexual orientation. There is only Tom. To understand what Tom is, you need to get to know Tom. There is only Jennifer. Same thing. You need to get to know her. LITERALLY the same for every single person alive, and who has ever lived. And yes, I am using the websters definition of "literally" correctly.
So with all that said, at age 11 I could understand the concept of individual sexuality before I fully understand how reproduction works. But I STILL can't understand at the age of 41 why someone would hate someone for being gay, or otherwise different.
Because I don't understand gay people either. I don't need to. I'm not gay but it's not my life. Nothing a gay person does to pursue a life that makes their life happy has ANY impact on my, or anyone elses lives. So why would I care? Go be gay. Live your life. Find happyness. It's so rare on this planet, so if you see the path to happyness you need to pursue that and never let it go. Don't worry about being different! If I worried about being different, I'd never have put bacon flavored googly eyes on a baked potato and then talked to it as if I'm a dragon, and now I need to drown my potato prisoner in cheese sauce, and eat it while breathing fire.
So when I see this shirt, saying if you could choose to be gay, you'd choose to be gayer my response is to shrug. I know OTHER people (i.e. shitheads) would get offended by this shirt, but it's only a shirt that goes hard if you let it. From that perspective this shirt is something that gay guys could use to go hard on homophobes.
And that makes me laugh.
Mate, wish we were closer so we could go for a beer. It is a nuanced topic, and your approach hits the nail in the fucking head. Sure, there are tons of variables, but the whole nature vs nurture is not black or white. And like you say, Who the fuck cares? It is their life, not yours, and you don't need to understand it to respect it.
Thank you for being awesome.
Epic rant - loved it.
Man, if being gay was a choice, I'd be balls deep in twinks the rest of my life
you might have some soul searching to do!
best of luck!
I, uh... Have a buddy with a soul they could search?
i read this as 'hole searching'
I will continue to read it this way.
I approach this from the other side. I'm (more or less) straight, but I watched Labyrinth on a loop when I was a little kid. If it was possible to be turned gay, then David Bowie would have turned me queerer than a three dollar bill.
Can I choose to be "bi-er?"
Oooh. Ich liebe bier.
How can one be gayer than 100%? Asking for a friend.
Depends on how your measure it, if by gay sex per hour, got to pump up those numbers, rookie. If by time in a relationship with a same gender person, then they need either a stable relationship, or to learn some multi-tasking through (preferably ethical) non-monogamy.
I choose "just sucking more dick" :-)
If you fullfill your Five Year Gay Agenda in 3 years, comrade
hahaha, that's solid
Good for you
You would choose to be Gaylord.
