So this is my humble 3-watch collection: SPB143, Prx 35 and Smiths Everest (and actually skx009 as well). I feel these fit all the needs I have at the moment and I really like the watches.

However, when I tried on the Tudor BB54 in april I signed up on the waitlist to buy it because I thought "This is it" and it is now waiting at the AD for me. For money reasons, I can't really justify to keep my current collection as well. And a BB54 would probably neglect the need for the Spb and everest as they more or less fill the same function. For a long term GADA, I see myself owning either a Explorer 1 or a BB54, being a fan of the smaller format.

Now that I have the opportunity to buy the BB54 I am a bit torn on what to do as I quite enjoy my current collection...

I therefore seek your advice: Would you keep this collection or would you sell it off and add a chunk of money to get the BB54?

It seems you might be short on money, so probably you should think of postponing the purchase of an expensive watch?

i would only keep the PRX

[–] csteven71@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I would sell and get the Tudor!

I can't stand the hour hand on the BB54. And the bracelet end link brushing doesn't blend well with the lugs. It also doesn't have a date complication so doesn't succeed as a GADA.

I would keep what you have and just save up for the bb54. Your watches are somewhat affordable and offer versatility. If you were to sell any, maybe the seiko would make sense, since it would be a diver for a diver.

You will take a hit on atleast the Tissot and the Smiths. Don't know how the market is for the seiko. But the BB54 is the perfect GADA watch

Sell to buy

I vote for keep collecting. But there's merit in both.

Who makes the left rubber strap? Thank You!

Just get a leather strap and wear it on the Seiko

Is that a smiths? Bad ass. Are you selling to raise money. If so be patient and save up for it. You collect is solid. Add to it

Sell. I was in a similar situation when I first started collecting and was happy to get rid of watches for some higher end purchases. Never looked back.

Sell and buy the BB. It’s like the perfect 1 watch collection.

[–] kidneytornado@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Just sell it and get a 2nd hand bb54, there is no reason to buy a watch firsthand from the AD unless its a Rolex/ap/pp/etc where the secondary market is more expensive

[–] Ok_Parsnip7262@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Sell. And sell me the smith's lol.

[–] MichaelXennial@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Do it. My old watches just sit in my box. Upgrade and don’t look back.

Having almost sold my whole collection to help fund a Pelagos 39 I would say no. Variety is the spice of life.

Consolidation is not a bad thing and it's quite a cathartic process to go through as I have done it myself recently with watches I have no strong bond to. Just make sure you're selling pieces on because you want to which happens as we can sometimes outgrow our purchases. You don't wanna regret selling and then have to buy again which will put you back in the same position!

I've done this exact thing...sell off a versatile collection of watches to fund a more singular "grail" purchase. In fact, I've done it twice (once being for the BB58). In both cases, I found that a one (or even two) watch collection falls short of feeling well rounded, and I quickly get annoyed/bored. In both cases I reversed course, sold the grail, and diversified my collection again.

Like you, I have a number of expensive hobbies, and I just can't justify tying up more than several thousand in watches. So, I've end up determining that, for me, a modest, rounded collection of watches in the 500-1500 range is where I'm comfortable. YMMV, of course, just sharing my personal experience.

Keep these, it’s an awesome collection. I love them.

Man I love a Seiko diver but I'd also be quite happy with a BB54 as a one watch collection

[–] 4thepersonal@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I dunno man… those are maybe worth $750 realistically. Nobody is looking for a used Seiko whatever that is. The other two are better used as gifts frankly.

[–] Illustrious_Help_484@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

In america(?) that might be the case. As a student I bought used seikos all the time, and know plenty people who does.

[–] cherryhilljawnz@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Keep what you have and when you're financially ready then you ADD to your collection

You may want to check out r/watchexchange they usually have some great deals on very nice watches

The bb is a beautiful watch, I can't even think of a negative thing to say however I think finding a watch at a yard sale or something is best. It'd be a cool story and unless it's up against your grail I think finding a watch is the way to go

You said you like a little smaller so check out some Breitling models, they have a line which has a very similar look to the bb

[–] Dangerous_Limes@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

FWIW I had an SPB and a BB58 and eventually sold the SPB since the 58 was getting much more wrist time. I imagine the 54 will be worlds more comfortable on the wrist than the SPB.

I'd sell the SPB but keep the other two, if that's an option.

[–] Watch-Goblin@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I’d say sell everything but the PRX that way you can still have a bit of diversity

[–] Ok_Jeweler_1332@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Sell. Your watches are fine but wearing the Tudor will be more fun than wearing any of these three.

[–] MrDagon007@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

The bb54 would be quite an appealing single watch

[–] RelapsedPianoholic@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I like that your collection includes three nice, very different watches; IMO too many collections on here are just boxes of the same or very similar expensive, interchangeable watches.
