Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

Sounds like we need to give them more tax cuts!

No joke but I know libertarians that are like this.

What if I told you they were responsible for it

[–] Carvex@lemmy.world 21 points 1 year ago

And were actively working against it in the name of immediate profit? Get the fuck outta here

Wow what a shock. Billionaires don’t care about anyone but themselves. That’s how you become a billionaire; you exploit and murder people, and the world.

There’s no billionaire that doesn’t have blood on their hands.

I can't imagine Oprah killing someone and yet I also can't imagine she hasn't.

She might not have personally murdered anyone (yet), but she DID introduce the world to a shitload of junk science as well as promoted a faith healer who raped probably hundreds of women and girls.

Glad to see in not the only one talking about Oprah promoting John 'of god'

Yeah, that one's DEFINITELY killed some people.

It's going to be hilarious when they either re enter Earth's orbit because they thought they could hide from everything in an orbiting space station .... or they just die alone in their underground bunker.

They may well be the last to survive but the destruction and chaos they cause will lead to a complete extinction of our species.

I can't remember the context of this factoid but I read somewhere that the ultra rich have been investing in yachts specifically for climate change. But because none of these assholes know how to actually use a boat, a bunch of bespoke industries have come out where yachts are loaded onto like a mega boat where they are ferried around the world.

Even bigger surprise - they don't give a damn about doing the right thing unless it's good PR and profit. Who'd thunk it?

Wanna shocker? Billionaires aren't solving even a quarter of the world's problems.

I bet you won't believe this! Billionaires like to hoard.

Years ago I learned that tribes people often create large herds (a sign of wealth) that then lead to desertification, famine and poverty. Seems like we do the same thing, but at a higher level.
