Where I live it's pretty common to use motorbikes and scooters for day to day commute. I've heard people talk about how bad the vibrations from them can be to mechanical watches.

Is it really that bad? Sounds kinda counter productive that these watches that were built for sports like diving or motorsport or were used extensively in the wars of the 20th century can't withstand the vibrations of a motorbike.

People are silly. Wear your watch. If it has problems, send it in for service. It's not going to make a big difference.

This is why you need an array of watches. You wear them out slower. (Me justifying buying a new watch every 3-6 months.)

It's fine in that most modern watch movements can withstand any brutal short term damage to the watch. Is the vibration doing zero damage? No and eventually after years and years and years it will add up and it will need to be serviced sooner than if you had not done that.

Personally I would say wear your watch and if it needs servicing sooner then service it. Remember you are wearing your watch - it's not wearing you. If your watch can't adapt to the life you already live it should be sold or thrown in the trash.

I’m more concerned of tiny pieces of gravel nicking the watch resulting in scratches than the actual vibrations fucking around with the mechanism.

I don’t recommended running over your watches with any motorized vehicle.

Call me overly cautious, I wear a quartz for the bikes.

A motorbike or scooter would make a terrible watch. Imagine lugging that about all day just to tell the time, your arm is going to be fucked by mid morning.

Not a problem at all.

But thick watches have problems with gauntlet length gloves, as well as sport style jackets. You’ll want to wear something thin for comfort.

It won’t affect them, the human body is remarkably good at absorbing shock before it reaches the watch. I use a motorbike as my main source of transport and always wear mechanical watches. No issues at all.

I rode motorcycles for 30 years, never had a single issue from vibration on any of my auto/mechanical watches ever.

Not a problem at all. Watches of far lower quality handled gunfire and bombardment in the trenches of WW1. Nerds just get paranoid.

Marc from Long Island watch made a video a while back and gave a mechanical watch to an avid dirt biker and tested it for like 6 months without an issues. Here’s the video. https://youtu.be/J8oyxKlLXps?si=JbinCwxEwfqeS9Ta

Edit: crap I just saw someone has already posted this video. Oh well I’ll double down on it.

It doesn't make any difference to the watch. I live in India- it's a two wheeler country with subpar roads. have been wearing my mechanical watches for years riding motorcycles. Made zero different to their accuracy.
