Coaching trees are dumb af IMO
NFL
A place for NFL news, game highlights and everything that excites you about American Football.
He’s extremely smart and also an asshole. His assistants are not particularly smart so the only part they can replicate is being an asshole.
Because his assistants attempt to recreate his style with other teams but without the credibility of 6 rings to back it up.
Honestly asking this...What defensive coach has produced any kind of coaching tree. Belichick and Tomlin sure haven't.
BoB and Flores were good head coaches, this has always been an overrated dialogue
Because Brady
"Imperfect Fruit" is a nice description for dog shit.
Because they were all good with the GOAT at QB.
Because none of the Tree ARE Belichik.
Because every Bellichick disciple tries to be a more hardass, over-the-top version of him without proving jackshit to back it up.
That and being assholes to important members of the team / the team in general.
All of the ego. None of the success or history. They aren't Bill in any way, shape, or form. Yet they seem to come into these teams that hire them and expect to be able to run it like Bill. They fail to realize that the players put up with Bill because he's got a proven history of success, and the rings to show for it. McDaniels, Patricia, O'Brien.. don't.
Most likely because they try to set the same standards Bill does while not having the respect Bill has, and obviously having Brady for a long time also helps.
I’d assume he doesn’t mentor these guys. He just tells them to focus on their job and leave him the F alone. Big difference between coordinator and coach, also. Mcdaniels is a terrible coach but good coordinator. There’s half a dozen of these genius’ out there who can’t control/coach an entire team.
Because Bill has decades of experience and they don’t. Not everyone who knows a lot can teach well. His understudies try to create an incomplete facsimile of his approach — the hardassed personality or old Pats retreads in the roster — which doesn’t work. You don’t go with a guy who’s 1% Bill or 40% Bill. Either it’s Bill or something completely different.
Because all time greats are excellent at obscuring flaws within a system. Bill is one of the best we've ever seen at coaching defenses so the DC cannot be gauged objectively and Brady similarly cloaked offensive ineptitude for years.
Not all that surprising that an organization that was effectively a two person brain trust has failed to bear successful fruit.
It's like the Garden of Eden, except you really DON'T want to eat the fruit
Because he isn't a good coach, a good teacher, or a good leader.
Ima go with maybe an out the box take here. BB knows how to talk with people. Whether it’s young black dudes or older white guys everyone in the middle does not matter he can connect with people. Maybe it’s something he’s learned or it’s innate. However he can be a dick of a coach cause as a person he can be funny, relatable and decent.
His protégés completely fail at this. They try to be Belichick the coach whose a dick all the time and this why their players tend to hate them. They can’t connect with their guys
They're more focused on trying to emulate Bill and the Patriot Way without fundamentally understanding their players and the situations they're coming into.
You don't build a culture by ripping from what you came from and injecting it. You examine your environment, identify those key concepts and beliefs that are core to your group, and pull from your past experiences to build something greater.
That's easier said than done, but it seems like a lot of coaches that fail don't ever do that and just want to mimic what they come from.
Belichik was really, really good at finding guys that are football smart even though they aren't great leaders. Belichik is a great football mind, but his best talent might be managing talent.
Because most of them were stuck with poorly run franchises.
Crennel: Cleveland
Mangini: Jets, then Cleveland
Patricia: Detroit
Judge: Giants (Dave Gettleman era)
McDaniels: C'mon, He went 8-8 with Kyle Orton as his starting QB. The Raiders have been a clusterfuck for pretty much 20 years now
Daboll is TBC
Flores has essentially been blackballed from the league, but he did pretty well in Miami
O'Brien's problem wasn't a bad coach, he was a bad GM, just like his mentor
Because it was all Tom Brady
Cause they don’t take Tom Brady with them.
Because they didn’t have their own Tom Brady in their roster, imo.
Not just Brady but they didn’t have Ernie Adams. Having a savant as you best friend doing football research for you is quite helpful. Bill hasn’t been the same since Ernie retired
Bill knows how to do team-specific gameplans and his assistants never figured that out.
At this point his system doesn’t work unless you have the reputation of Belichick. Hes likely not ever going to have a chance to show if he can do it with a good QB (and not GOAT) because he’ll be retired before he gets one.
He is the most overrated coach in football history. Lightning struck with Tom Brady and he rode that to legendary status.
Because they don’t have Tom Brady.
Lacks the fertilizer named Tom Brady
-
It's not like these come out of Bill Belichick's vagina as a clone of him. They're individual people each with their own set of experiences, opinions, and brains.
-
I suppose teams are biased into thinking coordinators for a dynasty must also be likely to be good head coaches, so these Pats assistant coaches end up getting offers they don't have the skill set to handle.
Brady tax I’m afraid
Tom Brady didn’t go with them
Bill is not a very good head coach, and is not able to teach others how to do it. Bill got very lucky to find Tom Brady, and had great success with him. But both before and after Brady, it becomes clear that Tom was why they won those games much more than Bill.
Because they try to be BB instead of trying to carve their own path. The hard nosed, strict stuff doesn’t work anymore, unless you have pedigree.
Because he’s overrated and was blessed with Tom Brady
Pre-Brady Bucs - Brady Bucs - post Brady Bucs
Combined with pre-Brady Belichek - Brady belichek - post Brady belichek
Combined with proof of bad drafting, and horrible legacy coaches proves this
Because Bill had the greatest quarterback of all time and it made him look like a much better coach than he actually is.
Because there is no Tom Brady tree
pats fans are this miserable?
dam.
Has he been that good since he can’t cheat?
Short answer - Belichick is overrated. Brady made him not the other way around. Really easy to lean into a "just do your job" mantra with the best player of all time running the show. The 00s rhetoric of Old Billy being a GM/HC genius has not aged well.
Because there’s only one Tom Brady. Mmmk
Because they only take the hardass stuff and forget everything else. Bill changes his scheme to fit his talent, he's not trying to force anybody into a role they aren't suited for, or shit on them for not fitting his scheme, stuff like that. He's a flexible hardass when it comes to coaching.
Not to mention they forget the human element. Yes, Bill is a hardass, but you don't get players being willing to run through a brick wall for you just because of that. He's like a grumpy old grandfather. The one who's gonna bitch and moan, but helps you out with stuff as a kid. Meanwhile, Patricia and McDaniels (probably the most notable examples) are just pricks. They don't respect their guys. Belichick does.
Because none of the other coaches had the most important part of Bellichick's model - Tom Brady.
To make an analogy: I manage an IT team - do I pick devs that would make good IT managers, or devs that make good devs?
Bill doesn't hire on head coaching ability. I'm sure he's made a few of them look better than they are at their respective jobs, too.
The most interesting nugget is how "Do Your Job" bleeds into this. Not only is it a mantra for you to do the job you're assigned, it also says for you to NOT do any jobs you are not assigned. Basically, Bill keeps all of the actual HoF HC stuff to himself. Not because he's trying to be secretive but because he doesn't want anyone else wasting their time.
They try to import the Belichick persona/Patriot Way and it never works out. They don't take what they've learned to develop their own leadership and culture. They just try to be Belichick and phonies don't last in this league. Maybe they'd still be bad, but they never had a chance.
Because none of them chumps had Brady ☠️
