The last time I tried to watch it, the show seemed to just be bad references. It had become the manatee joke. I’ve got no problem if you like Family Guy. I watched it for a while. I really liked The Cleveland Show and American Dad much more

They're wrong. I'm sure family guy has been on for 23 seasons because it sucks. LOL

[–] All_Lightning879@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not because it’s still good, but because it’s easy money.

[–] Away-Spell-7110@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

True, but if people aren't watching, it's not making money!

I thought it was a pretty good critique by South Park but I still liked the first 5-6 seasons of Family Guy back in the day, random joke structure and all. It was a funny show.

It just never really innovated much on that formulas and went on for way too long. I don't understand why it wasn't cancelled a long time ago.

[–] soonerfreak@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The first 5 seasons of Family Guy are full of bust out laughing jokes. It feels like hating to hate to deny it.

[–] NonCorporealEntity@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It was canceled. Twice. It keeps coming back like the undead.

[–] Brendissimo@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

When was the second time? I thought it was just after season 1.

[–] Business-Drag52@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Even Seth doesn’t understand why it’s still running. He wants it to end. Hell his only contribution to the show for the last decade is voices

[–] All_Lightning879@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It really is a show that continued to rest on its laurels.m, rather than innovating.

"If you look closely at the writing in 'Family Guy', you will see that the jokes never derive from the plot, and I think that's totally gay."

-Osama bin Laden

True, seth mcfarlane's other shows are WAY BETTER like the orville

[–] yrulaughing@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

If the jokes can't be written into the story, then they shouldn't be interrupting the story.

[–] iMugBabies@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Macfarlane has a very distinct type of humor that is very in-your-face, and it’s in everything he does. Ted, A Million Ways to Die in the West, and especially Ted 2, just feel like a live-action Family Guy and it’s not great.

I’ve always said that Family Guy’s humor is for those people that tell jokes you politely laugh at.

[–] Big-Moon-Eyes@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I watch every adult cartoon going, multiple times. Family guy is not my least favourite (that honour goes to Big Mouth/Human Resources) but it’s nowhere near the top or even middle of my favourite cartoon shows.

[–] scruntyboon@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

First couple of seasons were alright, but it soon ran out of ideas, the last time I tried to watch an episode, I didn't laugh once. It can also be unnecessary cruel, whereas there's always a point to Trey and Matt's jokes

[–] WangHalen@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Family Guy hasn’t been good since season four. Season 5 was the start of the noticeable decline, anything after that is basically unwatchable.

[–] KingofZombies@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I think the problem is the format. Watching random clips without context is fucking hilarious, even clever sometimes. But the full episodes drag too long.

I feel like the show would have been way better and would have played its strengths if instead of full 20 min episodes they should separate it into 7 min episodes, like the old looney tunes. Or something like that.

[–] Whoopsy_Doodle@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I don’t agree, but I get why they think what they think.

I agree that the writing can be better though, however can’t we just watch something to laugh anymore?

[–] Who_Else_but_Macho@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

i never liked that dumbass show anyway

[–] DoctorWinchester87@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Family Guy is like a nostalgia thing for me. I remember watching reruns of it on TBS when I was in middle school and there was nothing else to do.

The early seasons have a lot of clever moments and the characters hadn't been beaten into the ground yet. It was nice to have on in the background and chuckle at when the funnier scenes would come on. But I think it was pretty clear to everyone that virtually all Family Guy humor could be described by: "Do you remember that thing from the 1980s?" That and the extreme flanderization of all the characters was what made Family Guy overstay its welcome.

I think I ended up preferring South Park in the end because South Park is ridiculous and over-the-top in a way that doesn't talk down to the viewer. And it has much better writing and direction on average.

[–] Ms_Mcnugggets@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I like family guy but I LOVE South Park

Not really. Cartoons like SP, Family Guy, American dad, the Simpsons, Futurama, Rick and Morty and other western series stand in one category for me - sometimes funny, sometimes not.

[–] 4Ever2Thee@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I disagree, I find Family Guy funny but I get why they don't like being compared to it. FG is just for laughs comedy and they throw in a lot of unrelated cutaway gags and references, just because they're funny. South Park episodes are written with story lines that parody current events and social commentary, to put things in different perspectives and call attention to them; whereas FG will just make a 5 second cutaway making fun of a celebrity or company.

It's like comparing apples and oranges to me.

[–] triptoutsounds@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Family guy is straight-up cringe and lazy af.

[–] theGrimm_vegan@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The cut aways gave the show its own identity. They're often stand alone jokes which work in their own way. I did find it funny Trey and Matt had a manatee choose the cut away jokes

[–] Mr-Broski@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

its dumb and the cutaway joke’s definitely dont add anything

continues watching more

[–] historicalgeek71@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I liked Family Guy in its early seasons, and some of the post-Season 5 episodes since then have aged well (And Then There Were Fewer comes to mind, then again, I enjoyed the Agatha Christie story it was based on). That being said, I got tired of Family Guy (and Seth MacFarlane as a whole) halfway through Season 9.

[–] ODCreature98@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Most of it is Peter being an unbearable dick

[–] CDPR_Liars@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

They are right, especially since the end of Cleveland spin-off, Family Guy just got MUCH worse. And now using "Simpson plot-mode", when every joke makes storyline of nothing, like with Liam Neeson, it should be one-time joke, but noooo

[–] Ghost4530@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Tbh I like both South Park and family guy, and I like that they’re different. Could you imagine if every adult cartoon was exactly the same? Shit would be so boring. I have different moods for these shows, kind of like an appetite I don’t wanna eat McDonald’s when I’m craving chipotle.

[–] vinsmokewhoswho@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Family Guy was pretty good until like season...5 or 6. Afterwards it just became too dependent on the cutaway stuff and it felt unnecessarily cruel often. But not funny. Granted, I haven't watched the recent seasons, but I started to dislike it around season 7 I think.

Honestly I prefer American Dad, but again, haven't seen recent seasons.

[–] ZombieRichardNixonx@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I love both shows (but I love South Park way more), and while the critique is definitely valid, it's also unfairly trying to hold Family Guy to a standard that it doesn't hold itself to.

Family Guy knows what it is, and it doesn't try to be more than that. It knows that the plots are stupid and that the cutaway gags are lazy, but it also knows that the formula works and people enjoy it. Not everything has to have biting social commentary and subtle, intelligent humor. Sometimes a show is just an alcoholic moron getting himself and everyone around him into insane predicaments, split up with nonsensical one-off cutaway gags that do nothing to contribute to the plot.

If Family Guy pretended to be a higher-minded show than it is, the criticism would be more justified, but the people who make it know what it is. Criticizing Family Guy for being random and stupid is like criticizing Robot Chicken for being random and stupid. Both shows are meant to be random and stupid.

[–] All_Lightning879@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The difference is that Robot Chicken is a sketch comedy designed to be fast and random, and it’s only 11 minutes. It’s short, quick, and to the point. If something doesn’t land, it’s easy to forget.

[–] Sad-Lawfulness6831@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I think family guy got "better" after this. They got called out, and thats not always bad lol. American dad is better by a long shot.

[–] slaerdx@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I love both South Park and Family Guy (South Park ftw), they're each funny in their own way. I know FG isn't as good as it used to be, but I'd be lying if I said it doesnt still make me laugh every now and then.

[–] rvnender@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

First couple of seasons were great.

When they cancelled it and brought it back, that's when it started to suffer. It was almost like Seth had something to prove.

[–] orville-redcocker@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I watched an entire episode and never laughed once. Repeated a few years later, still sucked. Bad.

[–] jessenin420@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It's a good show when you're stoned and just want stupid jokes. Now if you're trying to look for story line and plot value, not so much.

“Family Guy“ … some episodes are classic. “Road to the Multiverse” especially. The older stuff I don’t care for much, but the very worst of it is better than “American Dad” with the weird alien who sounds like Paul Lynde; I have never found a minute of it funny at all. Ever. “South Park” is in a class by itself, tho actually the amateurish look of it annoys me sometimes. And you know what they say about opinions, everybody has one.

[–] TollyVonTheDruth@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I used to like Family Guy, but I just wasn't as entertained by it anymore. I think I stopped watching after season 12. The Conway Twitty bit was funny the first time; after that, it was annoying and a waste of time. Even more annoying were all the damn musicals. However, I must be fair and add that I don't care for musicals in American Dad or The Simpson's, either; but FG seemed to really overdo them. I'm glad South Park hasn't sunken that low and only had the one High School Musical episode -- which was actually funny. Sure, SP also has songs, but (to me) they're not super fucking long and annoying.

[–] thegaybookfox@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My wife and I literally watch it when nothing is going on

[–] terminally_irish@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I like it, especially the Blue Harvest trilogy, but I don’t love it.

In short, it insists upon itself.

[–] YossiTheWizard@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

To me, the 3 seasons before their cancellations, then some of season 4 after the return were great! But they ran out of ideas long ago.

[–] Eldritch-Cleaver@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I sometimes think people forget the closing message Matt and Trey said about Family Guy lol

[–] tiboldpinkus@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

it’s a very 2007 way of looking at life.

you should get your opinions about things. and then judge them through your eyes

[–] AloofConscientious@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

i also hate family guys formula.

[–] Appalachiastan1998@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Family Guy was good a couple years ago, it's gone dry like the Simpsons as of recent

[–] UniqueCartel@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I agree with their assessment of family guy at that time. Their criticisms are valid. I still like family guy and have recently gotten back into it after years of ignoring the show. I’d argue that it’s a completely different style of humor and obviously completely different type of show. Just bc they’re both cartoons they can’t really be compared in my mind. What I like about family guy is how they inject real life humor and experiences into their dialogue. An example not from family guy but from The Orville, which was Seth McFarlane again, is he was making fun of another character and his biggest issue was that “he drinks his tea with both hands”. And there’s lots of those types of bits in Family Guy.
