Not gonna lie, sometimes it gets overwhelming as a founder - wearing a lot of hats, lots of context switching doing completely different tasks.

For context, we are a team of two, and our product is completely bootstrapped.

Recently I spent a lot of time coding - rebuilding some of the tech debt of my app from the MVP, completely rewriting the app from the ground up to optimize the app for our users.

As a result, I spent less time marketing the app, and the growth suffered, and I feel terrible about it.

How do you stay mentally well, and motivated in times like these?

juggling coding and marketing for typogram, that's tough.

finding a balance is key. take breaks, maybe delegate a bit.

growth's a rollercoaster, don't beat yourself up. how's everyone else keeping sane while managing their projects?

My side project is an AI wellbeing coach in Discord called Ana AI. If you'd like to have a play whilst she's in BETA feel free to join the server:

For my own mental health, I find running, cycling, and Minecraft to really help clear my head. I'm also diligent with weekends and finish times for work.

It was a challenge for me to start resting. So much to do, so many responsibilities.
I ended up coming down with a fever for a week and all deadlines burned out.
The conclusion here is simple: Make a plan to rest and work. That way you can find a balance

Thanks so much for this reminder! I hope you do the same

Plan the marketing but have someone else do it

Best advice I ever got was to treat myself like another person.

Hopefully most of us already have a handle on the golden rule, and treat others the way we want to be treated, but I think a lot of us (especially ambitious people) are pretty hard on ourselves, even though if someone else was going through what we are going through we'd show them compassion and understanding. So ask yourself how you'd treat someone else, and then treat yourself that well, you deserve it.

I usually work more than 12 hours per day, these days I'm also so busy that I do a half work day on Sundays.

The key concepts for me to stay mentally well and motivated are physical exercise with a minimum of 10 000 steps every day, and Psilocybin mushrooms (whose usage is legal where I live).

I don’t think I’ve seen a single post on this subreddit that wasn’t a self promotion 💀

I'm building tech in digital mental health space, while still suffering from interpersonal relationship stress. Great 😑

Right now it's weed, music and scrolling through reddit; and the occasional Poutine.

Besides other actionable things others mentioned, I’d like to highlight one mental thing.

The thing that can demotivate you is your “should have” thought. You say you feel terrible for not doing marketing instead of development. But you DID so much development, that you considered backlog.

So I’d say, only way is to look ahead. Focus on marketing now. Not because you NEED it badly. But because that’s the logical next step after completing the dev process, in the order of things you chose to do.

Plan the marketing tasks, some bursts in a day, or some days in a week, but plan it!

Needed to hear this, thanks for the amazing advice !

For me, the two most effective strategies are:

  1. Talking to someone;
  2. Going for a run.

Talking to trusted friend helps. Tho sometimes I feel bad because I feel like I’m bringing down the energy. Guess it’s time to take up regular exercise !
