So we all know that the MVP is unfortunately just a QB award now, and no defensive player could ever win it before that either. Furthermore, the QB that wins isn't even always the best QB, it's just whomever the media likes the most around Week 13. It's chosen by some journalists who may, or may not, know or really care about football. I for one, think MVP has become a meaningless award and I have a rough idea on how it could be changed.
Every year, each team votes on a team MVP. It's voted on by the players and they chose who among their team should receive the MVP award. This award comes with nothing now, but I think it could be tied to the league MVP, like the Walter Payton award.
I think, after the season, every team votes on their own MVP, and then AP choses the league MVP from that pool. That way, we actually get players who heavily contributed to their teams and that their teammates believed were the best player in their respective teams that year. It will probably still lead to QBs winning the award, but at least they'll be better selected and it won't be a popularity contest like the NFL 100 because you can't vote for other teams.
What do you guys think? Is it a potential improvement, or is it all just fluff and no one cares anymore anyways?
