Brooks wants to clarify something. The criticism did bother him. For a while, anyway. Days after the Grizzlies’ season ended, Brooks tumbled down a social media rabbit hole. He read the comments on Instagram. On X, formerly known as Twitter, he scrolled through the replies. He saw everything. Machine Gun Kelly dropping his name in a freestyle (“Come back like LeBron and drop 40 on you like I should”). James, quoting Jay-Z lyrics, dissing him. (“Unlike you little I’m a grown ass man.”) Anonymous followers burying him. “LA Fitness Draymond,” one wrote. “Tired wrestling heel,” posted another. Suggestions that Brooks’s next stop would be in China briefly had the Shanghai Sharks trending. “That’s when I realized how big the Lakers were, how big LeBron James is,” says Brooks. He shrugs. “It’s part of my life. It’s going to make me a better player.”

Brooks hoped Memphis would support him. Instead, the franchise cut him loose. At a season-ending press conference, Grizzlies GM Zach Kleiman declined to address Brooks’s future. Days later, The Athletic reported the team informed Brooks he wouldn’t be back “under any circumstances.” In March, Memphis coach Taylor Jenkins had called Brooks the player who “epitomizes” the program. By May, that program wanted him gone. “What I didn’t like about Memphis was they allowed that so they can get out of the woodwork, and then I’m the scapegoat of it all,” says Brooks. “That’s what I didn’t appreciate. And then ultimately they’ll come to me on the low, as men, one on one and tell me something, but then not defend me when everything went down.”

In Houston, team officials watched with interest. For months, the Rockets had studied Brooks. They needed defenders. The Grizzlies finished in the top six in efficiency in each of the last three seasons, with Brooks regularly guarding opposing teams’ top perimeter players. They needed veterans. Winning veterans, preferably. Memphis made the playoffs in each of the last three seasons. The swagger, the confidence, the attitude? Houston, with win totals in recent years that looked like locker combinations, desired that, too. “Fundamentally, we want the player we saw in Memphis,” says Rockets GM Rafael Stone. “The aggression, the competitiveness, the willingness to do whatever it takes. That’s what’s attractive to us.”

1.) Memphis ABSOLUTELY threw Dillon Brooks under the bus. Pretty wild to see an organization display that level of unprofessionalism

2.) Dillon Brooks deserved it and I was highly amused by him being thrown under said bus

^ Both can be right and aren’t mutually exclusive

[–] Spaghettibeach@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

i have to agree with him on this, making him the scapegoat for their bullshit was a garbage move. It’s hard to have an ego when you’ve been humiliated so publicly, he actually embraced it and is better for it! I’m lying if I say I don’t admire it.

Iggy won a Finals MVP holding LeBron to 30 something PPG.

Brooks gets crucified for letting Bron drop a 40 in one game. Gimme a break. Lebron averaged 22 points over the 6 games btw.

LeBron can drop 40 on anyone if he feels like it.

Seeing Dillon Brooks become universally beloved by this sub out of nowhere lol

[–] daintybarley_deux@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

He wanted the smoke, got the smoke and now he’s bitching about it?

[–] Street-Common-4023@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I admit I was wrong cuz I was taken back at the control at first even tho he was a very good defensive player. But he has shown that he has improved offensively by slightly changing his jump shot. I’m impressed and hopefully he will help the rockets make some noise in the playoffs

Another villain brooks W

[–] dawnofthedunk_@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Here to point out that Memphis is 2-9 without the villain.

And before y’all say, yeah but Ja is out - they were a winning team (some would argue better) without Ja last season.

[–] Shanesvision69@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Dillon brooks was literally the worst player in the league while with Memphis. You can’t be “scapegoated” if it’s literally your fault. Happy that he’s become a viable player now!

[–] shoikan5@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I wasn't a big fan of Brooks, but watching him ball out for our national team made me an instant fan.

[–] Arooooooooooooooo@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Read this in David Attenborough's voice.

Brooks and Vanfleet are exactly what Houston needed. Because they hold Sengun, Green, and Smith accountable. You go from a guy like KPJ(ignoring the off the court stuff, because we all know he sucks, even before his most recent troubles) to Steady Freddy, and we actually run an offense. I figured we would just be god awful for a lot longer

[–] by_yes_i_mean_no@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

First they scapegoated Iguodala for a mutually agreed upon decision, then they scapegoated Brooks.

[–] LyonsKing12@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Funny how fast a narrative can change.

Dude was up and coming a year prior to las5 years debacle.

He did clown shit though, and now complains that he was treated like one.

There were multiple scapegoats, and yes, he was one of them.

Feels like Ja has been treated like the biggest scapegoat, deservedly so.

[–] mgrimshaw8@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Honestly I don’t wanna see anybody in here sharing Brooks’ opinion. This sub absolutely murdered this man, top comments literally saying he would be playing in china this season lmao

How exactly were the Grizzlies supposed to defend him? Make a Twitter post asking people to not be mean to Dillon? He talked a ton of shit, didn't back it up, then avoided post game interviews like a bitch. He earned every bit of shit people talked about him and I'm glad he's gone

[–] Snub33@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Seeing how he played til now and what Memphis is showing... This is a win for Houston and Brooks. Im from the Rodman era and i thinks something you have to take the bad with the good. But i must admit that Brooks did have a bad year.

[–] clashcityrocker20@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Dillon is right. I actually like him he makes the NBA interesting.

[–] Medic7802@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Meh, he did it all to himself honestly. Winning cures everything so Idk why he acted like that BEFORE winning, lol

[–] NoWayNotThisAgain@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Plot twist: He was the glue holding that team together. They're going to stay ass without him.

[–] TheEssentialQuality@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Dillon Brooks redemption arc is fascinating and could not have been written any better than is currently playing out with the 6-3 Rockets and 2-9 Grizz.

The man took all the criticism and hate and worked on it quietly.

I'll be the first to admit I thought dude was an absolute clown and absolutely hated the signing as a Rockets fan. But he has taken all the remarks about him not being an efficient scorer and flipped it completely on its head. On the defensive end he is the spark plug that gets the entire team going. If you didn't watch Rockets basketball last year it was just a bunch of highly skilled offensive players who looked to be a high flying exciting team that put up points, and at times the quickest way to get the ball back was slack on defensive.

The way Dillon locks in on defense each time down the court makes the whole team excel, its a difference you can see in the box score AND on film. He is a big time difference maker and one of the pick ups of the season.

[–] coopieandme@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Don't disrespect the future goat

[–] BillowingPillows@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I mean he also took an ungodly amount of shots and tanked their offense. He was bad.

[–] UncleCarbuncle69@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

“win totals in recent years that looked like locker combinations” is crazy tho

[–] PrayforPingPongBalls@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Nothing to see here Grizz fans. Just r/nba parrots who don't review their sources and have the memory of goldfish and don't know how to critically think.

[–] CupricFlipper@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Dillon fans always knew his worth and Grizzlies fans always knew what he was and what he could be. Guess the rest of the NBA is just now catching up.

[–] BurnItAllPlease@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Draymond green is the clown show of the nba. I would never let anything he said insult me . Machine gun Kelly is a asshat clown rapper . Why is bro upset ?

[–] Major_Wager75@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Let's stop acting like Brooks wasn't an absolute clown 6 months ago. Grizz threw him under the bus but at the height of his insane behavior and media pressers he acted like an absolute insane person. He's flourishing on the Rockets but he's still a jackass

[–] WaldoSimson@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

“LA Fitness Draymond” is funny af 😂😂

[–] DrixxYBoat@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Blud didn't know how big LeMessiah James is?

How you a casual at your own sport??

[–] Flaky_Scar_8388@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Memphis didn’t lose that series because of him.

[–] girth_br00ks@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Looking back on it....yeah, the response to his antics was a little over-the-top. Getting cooked by a pissed off LeBron James is nothing to hang your head over when you're just a role player.

[–] Beneficial-Feed9999@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I understand brooks in very unlikable and talked mad shit, while also not doing media time. But I agree they threw him under the bus. Ja is the future of the league but the fact that they wouldn’t stand up for brooks while ja is over here waving guns made no sense to me. But this is the nba and talent will always be welcome.

[–] WisdumbGuy@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

That's when he realized how big Lebron James was?! Bro come on

[–] tcourts45@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

What I didn’t like about Memphis was they allowed that so they can get out of the woodwork

Are we pretending this makes sense?

Do other people understand the woodwork/scapegoat metaphor. Maybe I can’t read.

[–] OneWildAndCrazyGuy17@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

La fitness draymond is killer

[–] Beastly_PaNDA_@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Memphis fan here. Dillon Brooks was the most hated man in the United States this time last year and was mocked for his antics in the playoffs. Why did the tone shift on him unless there is a bias against Memphis if nothing changed? Everyone agreed then Dillon was the problem and the Grizzlies were tired of dealing with it.

[–] WolverineLong1430@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

He is right. His team bailed on him and used him as scapegoat. They caved to the media. He wasn’t even the issue they lost.

[–] SgtSiggy@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Nov 22nd must watch TV with Mem v Hou :D

[–] Agreed_fact@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Didn’t Drake diss him on the song with 21 too?

[–] Peepeetodapin@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Dillon is correct.

Seeing how Draymond is staunchly supported by the Dubs, owners, coach, teammates, fans vs Dillon thrown out like garbage was quite puzzling.

Memphis just doesn’t seem like a good place to play.

[–] Devoidoxatom@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Appreciated JJJ standing up for him in that Podcast P episode. PG and friends were setting him up about Brooks but bro was loyal the whole time

[–] MaestroFlaps@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Memphis offered extensions throughout last season, but Dillon knew he could sign for more and the Grizz couldn't afford it. Everyone hates the guy, but as soon as he is anti-Memphis his word is gospel.

[–] plexiglassmass@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

What does this quote even mean and what is the woodwork in this context?

[–] Dependent_Way_1038@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

You know what, I hate the guy, but that’s a pretty level headed take

[–] briefchief@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

It's crazy how hard he has turned around the narrative around. I am genuinely rooting for him now, but I was so on the "Dillion Sucks" train just a few months ago. Does that make me a...casual?

[–] okom@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

x, formerly known as Twitter, sends me everytime lmao

[–] steelplate1@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

The Grizzlies turned their backs on Dillion Brooks when he was getting memed on. That’s gotta hurt for sure.
