Brooks wants to clarify something. The criticism did bother him. For a while, anyway. Days after the Grizzlies’ season ended, Brooks tumbled down a social media rabbit hole. He read the comments on Instagram. On X, formerly known as Twitter, he scrolled through the replies. He saw everything. Machine Gun Kelly dropping his name in a freestyle (“Come back like LeBron and drop 40 on you like I should”). James, quoting Jay-Z lyrics, dissing him. (“Unlike you little I’m a grown ass man.”) Anonymous followers burying him. “LA Fitness Draymond,” one wrote. “Tired wrestling heel,” posted another. Suggestions that Brooks’s next stop would be in China briefly had the Shanghai Sharks trending. “That’s when I realized how big the Lakers were, how big LeBron James is,” says Brooks. He shrugs. “It’s part of my life. It’s going to make me a better player.”

Brooks hoped Memphis would support him. Instead, the franchise cut him loose. At a season-ending press conference, Grizzlies GM Zach Kleiman declined to address Brooks’s future. Days later, The Athletic reported the team informed Brooks he wouldn’t be back “under any circumstances.” In March, Memphis coach Taylor Jenkins had called Brooks the player who “epitomizes” the program. By May, that program wanted him gone. “What I didn’t like about Memphis was they allowed that so they can get out of the woodwork, and then I’m the scapegoat of it all,” says Brooks. “That’s what I didn’t appreciate. And then ultimately they’ll come to me on the low, as men, one on one and tell me something, but then not defend me when everything went down.”

In Houston, team officials watched with interest. For months, the Rockets had studied Brooks. They needed defenders. The Grizzlies finished in the top six in efficiency in each of the last three seasons, with Brooks regularly guarding opposing teams’ top perimeter players. They needed veterans. Winning veterans, preferably. Memphis made the playoffs in each of the last three seasons. The swagger, the confidence, the attitude? Houston, with win totals in recent years that looked like locker combinations, desired that, too. “Fundamentally, we want the player we saw in Memphis,” says Rockets GM Rafael Stone. “The aggression, the competitiveness, the willingness to do whatever it takes. That’s what’s attractive to us.”

It was nasty work.

Dillon Brooks shots made - shots taken per game the last few years...

2020: 6.4 - 15.4 2021: 7.1 - 16.4 2022: 5.4 - 13.6 2023: 4.8 - 8.7

If Brooks was willing to take 5 fewer shots in Memphis he might still be in Memphis. I don't know who to blame that on but they wanted him to stop trying to take over the offense and jack bad shots and he wouldn't. Now he is willing to do that. I don't know what's different but it wasn't working in Memphis.

Brooks has always been unfairly criticized over minor shit going back to when Coach K cried about him when UO eliminated Duke in 2016.

Sco ducks!!

For how much of a clown he was last year, I respect this mindset. I might actually even start rooting for him.

I mean, both parts can be true. The Grizzlies had way more problems than Brooks being ass in the playoffs and threw him under the bus like he was the main reason they got smoked by the Lakers, and he dug his own grave with the fans too.

I don't even mind the talking he did, it's fun, but dodging the media after every single loss only to keep chirping and show up after the times you win just rubs people the wrong way.

I mean ime is basic seeing Dillon Brooks as his new Marcus Smart... Good signing tbh

I feel like I stepped into the Twilight Zone. Where was al this praise for Brother Brooks last season? 🤔

Memphis had a lot of issues and unfortunately for him, he was the most easily dismissed part of the equation

Since no one watches our games other than when we face Golden State or the Lakers in the playoffs, Dillon Brooks sucked. He was a black hole on offense and his ego was his downfall. We told him to shoot less he shot more. We asked if he resigned he said no. His contract ran out and he made us look like idiots in the play offs. His defense is decent but he also fouls a lot and would make other players hate him not for playing hard but after a few fouls he does something stupid like a guy in the nuts or grabs a dumb foul to drive home a point. We aren't a good three-point shooting team. Of course, we still take them but even Ja and JJJ don't go crazy with them because they know it be better to just drive to the basket with Adams. What does Brook do? Shoot whenever he freaking felt like it. Half-court shoot with Lebron and AD in front of you? Who cares not his problem. If you point it out than it is our fault for not giving me more shots. If he playing well with the rockets I am happy for him but he did not fit Memphis.

Grizz didn't believe in Brooks like the way Kerr believes in Green lmao

Perfect guy for Ime Udoka and doing a great job so far. Could go down the path of a better Pat Bev

[–] Baguy21@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

When will players understand that franchises unfortunately don't care unless you are a superstar for them. They'll dump you moment at any point

[–] jessandjaysaccount@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He wanted his team to defend him from the circus he invited and craves?

[–] PieCuresAll@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

How Memphis & Philly did Simmons was pretty messed up. Give Brooks credit though. He’s a solid defense who can make shots. Wish he would chill on the hot takes though. Let your game speak for itself. Probably find more support and be living an easy good life

It's always funny when something passes then some revisionist shit comes out and people lap it up.

The context is important: Brooks was talking mad shit, getting blatantly outplayed and exploited, punching Bron's nuts, and then dodging the media. He was a total embarrassment and doubled down on it all. Yes, I also think the Grizz could've been more diplomatic about it. But the truth is there was very little chance they were ever going to bring him back, and they simply said the quiet part out loud.

To be clear, this is not me saying Brooks is a bust or whatever. But he was absolutely the whole circus against the Lakers and he didn't own up to any of that. And looking at the comments I guess people here forgot about all that too.

Thanks Memphis you the best

[–] Asking4Afren@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The dude is a dog at the end of the day something we don't get anymore with this generation of NBA. Either you love him or hate him there's no I between. I'm fine with him ranting and getting in the heads of players.

[–] shortyman920@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Brooks was an easy target because he did it to himself. The Grizz could’ve been more professional about it all, but hard to say he didnt share the blame. He made the Grizzlies look like clowns in the playoffs

[–] sukari@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Loving the Grizz collapse though. They were talking so much trash before achieving anything.

[–] realfakejames@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Guy is crying about the consequences of his own actions

Nobody told him to take his WWE troll act so far, that’s why his own teammates were embarrassed by him after awhile, he became a distraction and a sideshow, then when he got humbled he dropped the tough guy act and went straight bitch refusing to talk to reporters after losses when he couldn’t wait to speak to them every day to talk shit

That’s on him not Memphis

[–] nickyv917@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He's a very good defensive player, but he started playing above his station. He though he could shoot threes and lock down LeBron, and crashed like Icarus.

[–] kwunyinli@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The anti-hero was born.

[–] Jolly-Ad-7017@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Dillon Brooks is our guy until forever man. Canada's proud of him.

[–] Turon26@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The Dillon Brooks curse is now haunting this Memphis team.

[–] exemptolive@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Does his butchering of common phrases bug a time else?

[–] KnickedUp@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

LA Fitness Draymond…i cant breathe 💀

[–] Julen_23@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Good for Brooks moving on and showing he is actually valuable and can still play "His" game. Memphis doing Memphis things, per usual. If Dillon was such a goon, why wasn't he ever @ the strip clubs w/ Jah in videos pulling out guns and acting childish?

[–] ctmccreery@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Nah I don’t want to see any flip-flopping on this.

DB was BY FAR the worst player in the playoffs. He talked an insane amount of trash, put a target on his team’s back, then would take horrible shots, play dirty, go like 3/11, then wouldn’t talk to the media.

[–] ej_stephens@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

As a Jazz fan, I was so here for the Brooks hate last year, but also as a Jazz fan I knew the man could play. They threw him under the bus and now the team looks like one of the biggest disasters in the nba without him

[–] Tipofmywhip@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Homeboy played like dog shit and then ran away like a wimp when it came time to back up the smack he talked. He’s a clown and they got rid of him.
