Donald Trump has said that he will withhold funding for New York City if presumptive Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani becomes mayor after November’s general election and doesn’t do the “right thing.”

Bullying, threats and coercion are MAGA's SOP. Also works to dominate the uneducated, contractors, colleges, vulnerable women, wage slaves and the GOP.

[–] Furbag@lemmy.world 14 points 9 hours ago

This is how the president responds to the democratic process...

I am so glad this guy is scaring the everloving fuck out of the right and the DINOs. I want a legion of folk just like him to run for office in every state and every office so we can sweep away the remnants of the old guard.

How will the federal government move forward if California & New York withhold their federal taxes?

New York & California are the real US's incomes.

You know what??? NY will survive. We survived prior to the Revolution. We survived after the Revolution and before the Constitution. We will continue this... and honestly, the FEDS do fucking nothing for us and why do they deserve to be paid??? They are fucking loafing political lying fucks. Fuck them and fire them.

I still am laughing at what Wonkette used for their image and headline on how the qons are reacting to Mamdani.. 🤣 🤣 🤣

"Wingnuts Exactly As Calm As You'd Expect Over Mamdani's NYC Primary Win" https://www.wonkette.com/p/wingnuts-exactly-as-calm-as-youd

[–] ZeffSyde@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago

This is a still from Big Trouble In Little China, for the curious.

[–] jaggedrobotpubes@lemmy.world 35 points 20 hours ago (4 children)

Then join hands with New England and the west coast and starve them back, because that's who has the money.

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 18 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (2 children)

That would only work with like-minded politicians. Old Democrats have spent more energy complaining about Mamdani in the past month than Trump's current presidential run.

[–] Lucelu2@lemmy.zip 8 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

So... what you are saying is that it is time to separate the wheat from the chaff. Those old fuckers need to retire and try to still appear wise.... they are fucking failures and should know it.

[–] buddascrayon@lemmy.world 5 points 10 hours ago

Yeah, we need to support David Hogg's initiative to primary old useless Dems.

[–] gandalf_der_12te@discuss.tchncs.de 23 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

I actually think that conservative journals like the WSJ have created the appearance that Democrats are anti-Mamdani, in an attempt to "divide and conquer" democrats.

i actually see a surprisingly positive response to Mamdani from democratic movements all across the US.

[–] Lucelu2@lemmy.zip 10 points 13 hours ago

Hey, I am an old Xer and have come to the realization that the reason we lost last election (other than the cheating but decentralized voting almost always wins over cheating)... is because we listened to those "Never Trump Republicans" and embraced the Cheneys and others. That was exactly the wrong tack. We should have embraced instead the Bernie/AOC and Elizabeth faction. That would have communicated to the people that we actually cared about their life circumstances in this post-Covid, war infected supply chain challenged economy. Let the New Economics/Distributist peeps inform us with some resilient strategies. We are Fucking Tired of the Old Ideas.

[–] Sneptaur@pawb.social 8 points 17 hours ago

Bingo. The media is entirely captured, obviously, and people don't understand what's really going on as a result.

He is copying Orbán in Hungary. He also "starved" the capital city because they elected an opposition mayor. The city is near bankruptcy at the moment. But hey, mini Trump also wanted to ban the Pride march there last Saturday, and as a result he made it the biggest mass event of the past 10 years.

So if things happen similarly, Trump might be able to actually do this, but it might just ruin his chances at the next election - provided there will be another one, according to him.

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 25 points 1 day ago (1 children)

ok, taco. can't wait for the day he walks this back and act like he's on top of things

[–] 1995ToyotaCorolla@lemmy.world 6 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

I'm sure we'll hear what he wants to do in two weeks

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 20 points 1 day ago

I mean doesn't he already threaten that even when a centrist or conservative Democrat is elected?

[–] madcaesar@lemmy.world 114 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I know nothing about this man.

But since Trump hates him he must be awsome

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 15 points 14 hours ago

Now there's plenty of reasons to consider him awesome - those have been listed by more serious comments than mine.

But did you know he used to rap?

Also, right-wing media tried to brand him "Zohran the Destroyer" and very promptly stopped doing so when they realized it sounds way too cool. Apparently he's going to destroy NYC by advocating for 1) raised minimum wage, 2) universal free daycare, 3) A working fucking bus system. He's got personal experience with the problems of the bus system, numbers, a working proof of concept, and a plan to Trump-Proof the city

I'm not even American and I'm rooting for him. Both because he might actually improve people's lives and because he just seems awesome. Been a long time I've seen a politician with his charisma, enthusiasm, and vision. I hope NYC votes him into the office!

Mamdani is a NYC mayorial candidate who is a member of DSA, pro-palestine, has stated that he would have Netanyahu arrested if he came to NYC, and is running on a platform of:

  • Fast and free buses within NYC
  • Rent freeze every year for New Yorkers in rent stabilized housing
  • City owned and operated grocery stores
  • Creation of a Department of Community Safety to tackle mental health challenges rather than NYPD
  • UPK

Creation of a Department of Community Safety to tackle mental health challenges rather than NYPD

This type of program has been working out well for Albuquerque. It removes a lot of police intervention for calls they aren't trained for (anything not involving a weapon, pretty much).

[–] Wiz@midwest.social 9 points 20 hours ago

UPK = universal pre-kindergarten

(Source: I just looked it up because I didn't have a clue!)

[–] Hoimo@ani.social 1 points 15 hours ago (3 children)

What's the situation with grocery stores in NYC that the mayor has to promise city owned grocery stores?

[–] jivandabeast@lemmy.browntown.dev 6 points 13 hours ago

Commercial groceries are expensive, a city owned distributer can negotiate prices with food suppliers and pass those savings along to citizens by selling food at or extremely near cost.

Also food deserts.

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 2 points 14 hours ago

What he's been saying is that NYC has an affordability problem. People can't afford basic necessities (rent, food, transportation, childcare). Can't speak for availability and pricing myself, I don't live in the US.

[–] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 162 points 1 day ago (10 children)

that is how you know he is the right candidate, Trump is an inverse indicator

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 34 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You can tell the quality of someone's character by the enemies he makes.

[–] phx@lemmy.ca 2 points 12 hours ago

Hopefully he also makes more friends and helps gain momentum to get the rest of the goons out in other jurisdictions

Mamdani won a mayoral primary, hasn’t even been elected yet and the hype on all sides is enormous.

Really hope New Yorkers dig in and back this dude.

[–] turtlesareneat@discuss.online 73 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He was already the favorite, Trump's endorsement here will cinch that up

[–] Cenzorrll@lemmy.world 8 points 20 hours ago

I'm pretty sure new Yorkers hate trump more than the Eagles, Red Sox, Patriots, and Mets combined.

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 292 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (5 children)

Oh but blue states not giving federal taxes over is "starting a civil war."

The civil war is already happening. Wake the fuck up people.

If that happens, time for more mass protests. Surround the White House and stop anyone from entering and leaving until funding to NYC is restored.

Lmao, damn, trump seems really scared of this guy.

All the conservatives seem really scared of this guy.

Wonder why republicans might be scared of Democratic candidates left of dead center. Almost like a real alternative not slobbering out neoliberal, Chicago school of economics, nonsense could sweep them in a lot of traditional safe seats.

Or at least be really hard to rally their base against if their base actually hears what the policies are.
