As a Pistons fan, I wasn't super excited about them hiring Monty in the first place. Huge salary, guy said he wanted a break from coaching, etc. But I gave them the benefit of the doubt since they are a young team and sometimes questionable coaching hires pay off. But after this 10 game losing streak I felt like I had to make it known that Monty Williams has basically been hard carried by Chris Paul. I'd had this hunch for a while but never looked at the numbers until now:

2010/2011 - New Orleans - 46 Wins 36 Loses - Chris Paul 2011/2012 - New Orleans - 21 Wins 45 Loses - No Chris Paul 2012/2013 - New Orleans - 27 Wins 55 Loses - No Chris Paul 2013/2014 - New Orleans - 34 Wins 48 Loses - No Chris Paul 2014/2015 - New Orleans - 45 Wins 37 Loses - No Chris Paul 2019/2020 - Phoenix - 34 Wins 39 Loses - No Chris Paul 2020/2021 - Phoenix - 51 Wins 21 Loses - Chris Paul 2021/2022 - Phoenix - 64 Wins 18 Loses - Chris Paul 2022/2023 - Phoenix - 45 Wins 37 Loses - Chris Paul 2023/2024 - Detroit - 2 Wins 11 Loses - No Chris Paul

So that's 716 games coached total with 398 w/o CP3 and 318 w/CP3. In the 398 w/o CP3, Monty's record is 163 Wins 235 Loses for a 41% win percentage. In the 318 with CP3, Monty's record is 206 wins 112 Loses for a 65% win percentage.

Obviously simple looks at wins and losses don't tell the whole story but his record without Chris Paul shows a coach that did not deserve that massive salary. Especially with how this season for the Pistons has started.

I was pretty surprised he got that massive contract after watching how badly he was outcoached by JKidd 2 years ago. I’m not a Monty Williams believer.

The roster also sucks in Detroit

The roster is just garbage.

Ausar Cade Duren and Ivey is not a garbage roster. You don’t know what you are talking about. We were looking amazing in the beginning of the season before Duren got injured we’ll be fine these people in this sub don’t watch our games

Coach is better generational talent than without.

Not saying monty is doing a great job but pistons would be a bottom 5 team with any coach, the roster is awful and have a lot of raw young players

Monty definitely denied OPs request to marry one of his daughters.

Why do people always mention the money Monty is getting paid? Who cares. Not like it counts against the team’s cap sheet.

They need Duren, Bogey and Morris to come back asap.

could make ownership reluctant to cut and move on if things are bad if they got a lot of money tied into him that they would still have to pay to fire him early in a contract. It's not nba 2k

Everybody he played with had their best years with him this is nothing new.

He got guys paid, got coaches coach of the year, he improved players' reputations. All kinds of shit.

bro i watched jason kidd outcoach monty during our playoff series….

when Jason Kidd is making better adjustments than you, there’s a problem…

Did you ever use your brain or are you just that dumb? Obviously when the best player on his team is out his team won’t play as well. This sub gets more stupid every season

what an amazing and not horribly reductive and nonsensical argument

175-232 career record outside of his Suns stint. Not a good head coach.

Montys first season with the Suns was not pretty. Many people wondered why we were invited to the bubble because we were so awful. We ended up going 8-0 in the bubble. He will build culture and that does not happen in 12 games.

Give him time. I think he can get the Pistons going in the right direction. Whether or not he is the guy for a Championship contending team is another question. One step at a time.
