Hi! I am looking for a rugged outdoor automatic watch that I can use when I fish and hike. I really like the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Titanium but it's a bit too expensive. Looking for something under 5k and no bigger than 42mm. Any good suggestions?

Sinn and Luminox for automatics

Timex, Casio and Garmin for quartz/smartwatches.

Omega Aqua Terra - reliable, good looking, 150 meters water resistant and will last you a lifetime

Tudor Pelagos is my go to tool watch. That thing is indestructible

Don't they have issues with the lume falling out of the bezels?

Fishing on a yacht, I assume.

Ever eaten a Cheeseburger with a hublot inside? I haven’t.

Makes me wet fr, thats a better and more rugged alt to sinn 104. Even better lols. Actually i think i like that one vetter than the 104

Honestly, fishing and hiking don’t necessarily require a super rugged watch. Water resistance yes. I think anything from Tudor, Sinn, Seiko with 200m water resistance will be fine.

Naomi Uemura wore a Seiko Captain Willard to the North Pole. I wear my Seiko SLA049 often doing outdoor activities for almost 2 years and it’s been fine.

Sinn, Damasko, Marathon, but honestly just get a G Shock. I own all 4 of these brands but I don't like wearing heavy watches when doing physical things so I end up just wearing a G Shock square.

Timefactors Dreadnought Voyager or Baby Dreadnought,,, check them up

Well the Bremont MB-I, MB-II and MB-III lines are designed & tested to survive violent ejections from fighter jets, at around 20Gs. (The MB stands for Martin-Baker, the maker of ejection seats).

Scroll down here to the MB series:

https://us.bremont.com/collections/altitude

They start from just under $5000 retail.

GPW is a german company that makes one hell of a titanium field watch.

[–] spence4101@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Victorinox Inox if you’re looking for something that’s been tested for that kind of stuff

Definitely Marathon, good enough for the military, more than good enough for us joes

I have a Hamilton khaki field automatic that I use everytime I go fishing or camping

[–] KazBodnar@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Hamilton Khaki Titanium (Or expedition) is perfect: light, rugged, strong, reliable

Damasko dc82. Almost Unscrachable, ice hardened steel construction. You won’t get a more rugged mechanical watch than that (sinn also a good option)

Absolutely love my Marathon JDD. And I’ve put it through it’s paces; slamming it on rocks, submerging it while free diving, mud, etc.

Premium:

  • Sinn

Semi-premium:

  • Victorinox

True answer: don’t use automatic watches for sports or going into rough conditions. Get a Casio (G Shock or Duro), BOLDR (fantastic for this and versatile), Marathon, etc.

Could probably find a Breitling Chronomat B01 42mm for that budget. It's a lot of watch for 5k

[–] MotherAd1865@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

You're not going to like this answer, but get a G-Shock for hiking and fishing. If you're truly looking for something robust and functional you can't beat it. Save the luxury watches for when you're not doing those activities...

[–] MOTC001@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Great watches within your budget:

Squale 1521 50 Atmos COSC

Ares Diver/Mission Timer

Tudor Pelagos

[–] Rauldisco@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Hamilton just released a new line of watches, supposed to be more rugged than their previous ones specifically marketed to explorers and whatnot. I have a Hamilton khaki I put on a nato strap when camping and hiking

I think the Omega Speedmaster is a fairly rugged watch. I believe it went to the moon?

[–] RangerGripp@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Except it’s not automatic, is not swimmable and it’s on the larger end of what he’s asking for - greet watch, bad recommendation

[–] thetransfermaster@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Mühle Glashütte S.A.R. Rescue-Timer is another exceptionally durable automatic.

[–] crosspolytope@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I also like the muhle glashutte Seebataillon. Assuming you occasionally travel out of your time zone it gives you gmt function as well.

If titanium/exotic material is what you’re looking for under $5K you cannot go wrong with either a Sinn T50 variant or a Pelagos/Pelagos FXD variant. I personally have the Marine Nationale Pelagos FXD for this express purpose.

[–] itsritdude@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

This watch looks great! Is there anything similar under <$500 range (I know I’m asking for a lot)

[–] Platophaedrus@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Lack just completed DIN 8330 testing on their new watch.

https://www.laco.de/en/watches/din-8330-watches/hamburg-din-8330

But honestly, truly rugged is a G-Shock (which I know doesn’t fit the automatic criteria).

[–] ChangingMonkfish@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Seiko Samurai

[–] fusiongt021@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Rugged check out JLC Master Compressor Diving watches. Maybe not the new ones as that could be out of your price range but their older 2000-2010 ones are still great and a much better price. Check chrono24 for some. And as far as watch makers go, I would put JLC up with any of them.

[–] Coubyman23@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Sinn, Squale, G shock

[–] TangerineAbyss@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Boldr has a range of rugged watches that look similar to this.

[–] Idlikethatneat@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Regardless of what watch you pick- highly highly recommend an Erika’s Originals strap for outdoor endeavors. Perfect amount of flex and give.

[–] RangerGripp@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

For rugged there is Sinn, and then the rest.

[–] CdeFmrlyCasual@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Rugged in what sense?

[–] stressbymountainbook@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

A Ball watch is pretty rugged and if you get one with their signature Tritium lume, it will be lit all the time. No need to charge it under a light. Starts around 2k

[–] Afraid_Promotion352@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I’m rubber strap 90% time with my overseas. It is rugged as f. In case anyone cares

Just bought a Tudor Black Bay Ceramic. Beautiful watch, hasn’t scratched yet. Bezel isn’t terribly readable at night though lol. It’s my daily wear on a rubber strap. You can pick one up used for ~$4k.
