Right, so I have a 1U R640. People claim it's loud but I have found it tolerable, until I added a GPU.

Now my fans are always at %100. Is this by design/am I boned if I want a GPU in this thing? These are data center grade boxes where noise isn't something considered.

Perhaps I should sell this for a tower, or is there a fix?

It’s by design. Rack servers are designed to do that why they detect unknown hardware that they don’t know the thermal requirements of.

What kind of GPU did you add? When I added a pair of K80s and later on a P100 to my R730, it started reading the GPU temperature off of them and adjusted the fan speed as needed, no tweakimg required.
