I received this watch from my dear friend as a gift, I stashed this away for years, but he recently passed so I remembered this, I know nothing about watches so I thought to ask here.

We only post when something is not quite right, to get the confirmation, especially when one is not too familiar with how a brand is supposed to look.
Mods can we finally have a section in this sub where all these “genuine” authenticity requests belong ? It’s getting sad now

Sorry about your friend. I would forget about whether it’s real or not, that doesn’t matter. It’s a memento of a dear friend and will always remind you of him. That sentiment is worth more than a Rolex.
