So, a bit of a backstory… I am currently travelling around Bali, Indonesia. I have been on the road for about 8 weeks now. I don’t have a return trip back home yet LOL. I have been noticing that the internet can be quite restrictive at times here and was thinking that a VPN might be useful. I cannot use my work laptop and would only need this for my personal laptop.

I wouldn’t need it for anything special or super secure, just day to day browsing, Netflix and I do some gaming in my spare times. I’ve looked at review websites but there are so many free ones and A LOT of paid ones have come on the market recently.

Does anyone have any PERSONAL experience and a recommendation of a VPN they have used/currently using specifically whilst travelling?

I use NordVPN and ExpressVPN. Sometimes one works better than the other in different locations.

The free ones tend to suck for one reason or another.

private internet access if you just want a VPN.

Mullvad if you want a more secure VPN.

I have used both and both have fast speeds. I personally use mullvad and avoid free VPNs as a rule of thumb. "if the product is free..." and all that.

Consider setting up your own Tailscale VPN back at home that you can easily connect to. Then you're not trusting/relying on anyone else. https://thewirednomad.com/vpn.html
